I was sitting across from a well-established CEO, who had built a multi-million dollar company from the ground up. We had been introduced through a mutual connection, and his assistant had reached out to schedule a meeting. The email was direct –“He needs strategic guidance. He’s at a crossroads.”
I had no idea what that meant until I walked into his office. Of course, I Googled him and had an idea or two about him, and I also used my proprietary AI tools to learn more.
The room was filled with all the trappings of success: large oak desk, nice chairs, framed accomplishments lining the walls – but there was an underlying tension in the air... His gaze was fixed on the wall in front of him, his expression one of quiet frustration.
Without wasting time, he spoke.
“I’ve been growing this company for 10 years. And now, we’re at a crossroads. We’ve done everything right, yet it feels like we’re stuck. The market is changing, the competition is getting fiercer, and I’m not sure how to keep my team motivated while making the tough calls.”
His words resonated with me immediately. This was a classic leadership crisis – success had brought the company to the top, but now, the same leadership mindset that helped them reach the peak was starting to hold them back. What had worked before wasn’t working anymore. The strategy needed to change, but how?
We began talking about his leadership team, the people who helped him build the company. They were talented, driven, and loyal. But that was part of the problem. They were stuck in old ways of thinking. There was a lack of innovation in the decision-making process, and many of them were resistant to change.
I asked him one simple question: “How are you empowering your leadership team to lead through change?”
He paused. “I’ve been doing the leading. I make the calls.”
That was the moment I realized – this wasn’t just a crisis of market competition. This was a crisis of leadership itself. He had become the bottleneck, relying too heavily on his own decisions, without empowering his team to step up and lead.
The company’s next phase wasn’t going to come from his solo efforts. It was going to require a shift in how leadership was distributed and executed within the organization.
The Mentorship Gap: Empowering Leadership for Change
It’s easy for CEOs to assume that their success and expertise are enough to carry the organization through challenges. But the truth is, true leadership is about empowering others, cultivating innovative thinking, and building a culture that thrives on change.
That’s where my mentorship program comes in. I help senior leaders like him understand that leadership isn’t just about making the tough decisions alone – it’s about creating an environment where their teams can also think critically, take initiative, and lead effectively.
Here’s how I guide senior leaders through this transformation:
The Turning Point
As we continued our conversation, the CEO’s tone shifted. The frustration was still there, but there was a new sense of urgency, as if he’d just realized the full extent of the problem.
“I’ve been trying to do it all myself, haven’t I?” he said, almost to himself.
He leaned forward, eyes fixed on me. “How do I fix this?”
I smiled. “It starts with you recognizing that leadership is about empowering others, not about doing it all yourself. You need to help your team become the leaders they’re capable of being.”
We spent the next hour discussing how he could implement these principles within his company. He was excited, but more importantly, he was ready to let go of the old habits that had brought him success, knowing that the future required a different approach.
The Outcome: Leadership Beyond the CEO
Two weeks later, I received a message from the CEO. "We've made great strides. My leadership team is finally stepping up, and the energy in the company is completely different. It’s working."
I was thrilled to hear this, but as I always do, I threw in a small reminder: "That's only the beginning. Now, it's about maintaining momentum and adapting to new challenges. Leadership is a continuous journey."
“You’re right,” he responded. “I’ve already started planning the next steps.
And just like that, the real transformation began.
But as with any meaningful leadership change, it’s never a one-time fix. It's a process of constant evolution, and it’s something we’ll continue to work on together.
Oh, and yes – I’ve opened the next round of mentorship programs for senior executives. If you're ready to take your leadership to the next level, let me know.

Great insight for CEOs and senior executives! Developing leadership skills doesn’t stop at ambition. It takes strategy, mentorship, and growth.
Great article! Sometimes, we need a push to realize that growth comes from beyond just ambition.
Powerful message. It’s easy to assume that hard work and ambition will carry us, but we often forget the value of guidance from others who’ve walked the path before us.
