Is ambition a dirty word? I don't think so!

Ambition is not a dirty word.?

So, why do we fear taking our careers to the next level??

At many points during our lives, we have something called a Call To Adventure.?

A calling to do something exciting, yet scary.

This could be leaving a job, moving to another country, or leaving a relationship.?

The Hero's Journey

The ‘Call to Adventure is a key point in the Hero’s Journey. A popular storytelling device.?

Hollywood uses the Hero’s Journey a lot. You’ll find the film’s main character experiencing a life event. Which pushes them to start an adventure.?

Star Wars and Harry Potter have this basic plot line. It’s always a winning storyline.?

But why is this??

Well, it’s exciting. We see ourselves in the character who’s daring to take on a challenge.?

We see ourselves as the person trying to prove something, against the odds.?

It’s a reflection of our personalities. What we’d subconsciously like to do with our lives.?

Call To Adventure?

I believe we have these moments more often than we think.?

But, we choose to ignore these thoughts. We dismiss our ambitions because we fear we’ll never make it.?

We fear there will be no happy ending. Unlike the movies.?

Ambition

It can be a dirty word in business.?

Climbing the ladder is respected yet off-putting to many.?

Reece Witherspoon said, “I believe ambition is not a dirty word”, in her Glamour Women of the Year awards speech.?

An act of defiance. Casting light on the problem that many women face if they show ambition.?

Yet the fear of showing ambition is not limited to either sex.

Social Media

It’s very easy to compare yourself with other people on platforms like Facebook or Instagram.?

Especially if the people you follow are bragging about how they swim in the sea every day before their breakfast overlooking the beach.

What a life to log on where you want, when you want.?

We see people who’ve broken free. This prompts us to dream. To think of our ideal life.?

But, something stops us.?

Is that ambition??

I don’t know.?

But what I do know is that people have these moments of inspiration. I see this in my coaching practice.?

Individuals who are disillusioned with their careers. Usually not for bad reasons.

Purely because they want more from their life. They feel like they can push themselves to achieve greater things.?

And it’s when we ignore these feelings that we’re left with regrets. Feelings of what could’ve been.?
