Ambient Computing - The Need for Better Cybersecurity

The rise of ambient computing and large language model (LLM) technology has upped the ante when it comes to cybersecurity, especially with our peripheral devices. The IoT that surrounds us is comprised of a large variety of gadgets that are always on, hearing and seeing everything that we say and do. So, where does all that information go? Straight into cyberspace where it will probably live forever and be used for unknown purposes. That’s yet another reason why cybersecurity has become the new imperative.

Interacting with LLMs is especially risky in that they are capable of compiling, sorting and saving data about users. To prevent sensitive information from being disclosed, we must be mindfull of what we say and do while our device cameras and microphones are on. Granted, that’s not easy but we must not leave ourselves open to compromising personal and financial data. To that end, here are some suggestions:

• Turn off/mute your microphone and place tape or a post-it on your camera lens when not in use
• Only grant video and microphone access to trusted apps
• Use strong passwords to protect your accounts
• Monitor your microphone and video device lights for unauthorized activity??
• Practice good cyber awareness
