Ambient, Chilled And Frozen Product Packaging Inspiration

We were recently contacted by someone seeking our expertise in this area. They were experiencing issues with their shipping boxes from another manufacturer disintegrating and collapsing after being stored in refrigerated conditions. A disastrous scenario indeed, but how did this happen?

The first questions our team asked to find out more were based around which type of board their boxes had been manufactured from. If we know at the initial quote stage, that goods will be stored ambiently, refrigerated or frozen at any stage in the shipping and transit process, we can select a suitable performance board.

This ensures packaging can deal with anything from ambient and damp conditions right the way through to full freezer storage.

In the case of this particular enquiry, the wrong type of board had been used to manufacture their boxes and it had therefore collapsed.

It might seem obvious, but the type of product being stored inside the box has to be considered at the initial quotation stage. Ensuring this doesn’t get overlooked can really make the difference between the type of event that happened above and supplying packaging that’s fit for the purpose it will be used for.

Early specification of special requirements also means the entire packaging manufacture process can be reviewed to ensure that closures and any glue or tape used are also suitable.

Packaging For Transporting Frozen Goods

Why use special board for this type of packaging?

It’s worth mentioning here that packaging manufacturers sometimes refer to this type of board as semi-chemical or semi-chem packaging. However, due to differences in board strength between different manufacturers, it’s more commonly referred to as a performance board and is usually manufactured with heavier fluting to give better stability and firmness to packaging.

It’s important that your packaging can deal with different transit conditions. Even a slight increase in damp conditions can affect packaging strength.

It’s worth mentioning here that this type of packaging can provide protection for goods and parcels left on doorsteps and being damaged during rainfall as well.

Performance Boards Ensure Strong Packaging

Performance board offers the following benefits:

-??It’s a thicker board and therefore enhances the firmness of the packaging.

-??It provides dimensional stability and gives packaging extra strength, which ensures it shouldn’t collapse, crush or warp easily.

-??This board can deal with various temperate and moisture conditions with ease, ranging from ambient to damp, chilled or frozen. This ensures varying climate conditions are no problem.
