The?Amazon Web Services European Sovereign Cloud will be launched in Germany first with the service available to all European customers. The new service offers customers further choice to meet their data residency, operational autonomy, and resiliency needs; while maintaining the same security, availability, and performance of existing AWS Regions.
AWS European Sovereign Cloud will provide clients with a range of computing services, including storage, processing, and secure data management, all compliant with EU regulation.
The new service comes in response to increasing demand for cloud solutions that meet Europe’s stringent data privacy rules and the concept of "digital sovereignty," which emphasises European control over data and technology.
AWS Sovereign Cloud will operate on separate physical and logical infrastructure from Amazon's other cloud services, exclusively using servers situated within the EU; likewise, all metadata generated by AWS European customers will be kept in the EU (such as roles, permissions, resource labels, and configurations used to run AWS). The service will also feature its own billing and usage metering systems. Access and control over the operations of this cloud service, as well as providing customer support, will be limited to EU-resident AWS employees?only.
This move underpins AWS existing commitment to digital security in Europe; AWS was the first cloud service provider to receive the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) C5 testate (Cloud Computing Compliance Criteria Catalogue).
