Amazon on the Move

Amazon on the Move

After 18 months of no new marketplace launches, Amazon is launching in two new countries in the next twelve months.

?

The first is Amazon South Africa which launched this week. It is their first in sub-Saharan Africa. They are launching with a limited supply of products across 30 categories and no Prime Membership. The market conditions and strategy are similar to Australia where amazon were late to the market behind eBay and slowly developed their service and offering to become the No 1 marketplace five years after launch.

The other is Amazon Ireland which is scheduled for launch in early 2025. This marketplace announcement has been long awaited. There has been continual speculation of an appending launch after amazon opened a warehouse in the country in Sept 2022. Until now, Irish consumers have been used to shipping products in from the UK and EU. From next year, they will have faster local delivery and a wider array of local sellers to choose from.

Amazon will use the rest of 2024 to recruit new sellers across their key categories (e.g. consumer electronics) and partner with flagship brands (e.g. Lego). There aim is to pull Irish consumers into the website with the promise of a broad selection of good value products from local heroes and international brands. Similar to amazon.co.za?the Amazon Ireland website will have limited functionality and a small catalogue at launch.

It's great to see Amazon expanding into new markets. Given the unique consumer behaviors in Ireland and South Africa, how do you plan to tailor your offerings to these regions? Excited to see how this unfolds.

I guess it wasn't a big issue before Brexit (?? ) for Irish customers to get deliveries from Belfast from the UK version. The South Africa announcement is a landmark announcement. It's a new continent for them.
