Amazon has launched an AI-powered shopping assistant – named Rufus – in the UK for the first time. The chatbot is initially being launched to a batch of customers on the mobile app. It has been trained on Amazon’s product catalogue and information from across the web to enable it to answer any shopping queries users have.
Mercury Holidays appoints first Chief Marketing Officer
Mercury Holidays has appointed Chris Armond as their new and first Chief Marketing Officer. Chris Armond joins Mercury Holidays having left Ocean Holidays in July 2023.?Prior to that, he worked as marketing director at Loveholidays for two years and head of digital marketing at Tui for more than four years.
Mercury Holidays chairman Martin Bugeja said: “‘We are delighted to have Chris join our team. He brings a wealth of marketing and travel industry experience and will be great addition in achieving our strategic growth targets through performance-led marketing.”
City Hall's digital chief urges Londoners to 'trust' AI to help bring prosperity
Londoners have been urged by the capital’s first Chief Digital Officer, Theo Blackwell, to trust and embrace artificial intelligence to help generate prosperity. Theo said the AI-led digital revolution will be crucial to supporting London’s future growth by improving public services and aiding job creation.
“We’ve backed a series of local projects which use AI to understand air quality, flooding risks and even its use to enforce against flytipping, and have already begun to see the huge potential of Generative AI in improving public services and supporting job creation."
TV news is overtaken by digital rivals for the first time in the UK
According to research by Ofcom, television is no longer the main news source for UK adults, with online websites and apps growing in popularity. Regarding how the public accesses news, the research found that 71% get news online, compared with 70% on television. 52% of UK adults using platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and Instagram for news compared with 47% in 2023.
