As reported in the Lowpass Newsletter, it appears that Amazon are moving away from the Android-based OS they use in Fire products and smart displays.
Amazon is referring to this system under the name Vega, it appears to be running on the new Echo Show 5, effectively an Amazon Alexa with a screen.
The new operating system is built on a version of Linux, allowing applications to be built in React Native, a more accessible Javascript-based framework that enables functionality on a wider variety of devices.
At Shoothill many of the apps we build are built in React Native for this very reason, a wide scoping compatibility, means that when our systems launch be that to consumers or into a business they work on a wide variety of devices.
At this point, there are very few sectors or businesses that Amazon haven’t broken into.
Just this week they announced the Buy with Prime program, which offers the benefits of Prime with third parties, expanding their reach beyond Amazon services.
You can now delete Threads without deleting Instagram
In a change to Meta’s overall policy, you’ll soon be able to delete your Threads account without losing your Instagram account.
At launch, this was heavily criticized but was implemented to try and retain users and become a rival to alternative platforms like X.
Announced by the head of Instagram on Threads there is a new Deactivate or Delete your profile section in Threads.
Tech Ministers sacked in reshuffle
Both the Minister for Tech and the Minister of Science, Research and Innovation left Sunak’s cabinet.
In this week’s cabinet reshuffle, Paul Sully, Minister for Tech and the Digital Economy was sacked.
Taking to X the MP said: “Now I can concentrate on Sutton, Cheam & Worcester Park; my family, life in general whilst looking in on govt’s progress ??and of course, getting a better Mayor for London who actually cares about our great city”.
The Minister had worked on the Online Safety bill and the nation’s semiconductor strategy aiding Britain’s overall technological future.

Minister for Science, Research and Innovation, George Freeman also resigned after five different ministerial roles.
Andrew Griffith, Minister of State in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and Saqib Bhatti, Parliamentary under secretary of State in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology take their place. ?
Griffith is the former Chief Financial Officer for Sky and Bhatti, a former accountant.
Actors strike ends
The Hollywood Actors Strike has come to an end after more than 6 months.
The Union SAG-AFTRA returned to work last Thursday, following the Writer’s Guild of America’s decision to do so as well.
The unions have reached agreements with studios on limiting the use of AI and increasing wages.
Generative AI models like ChatGPT use massive databases to create content without the need for human creativity, greatly streamlining the process.
Creative industries are concerned about this.
