Amazon: Kindle books outselling print books

Amazon.com users are now purchasing more Kindle books than print books, including hardback and paperback, combined, according to the company's announcement on Thursday. For example, since April 1st, Amazon.com has sold 105 Kindle eBooks for every 100 physical books it has sold. "Customers are increasingly choosing Kindle books over print books," stated Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO and Founder. "We had high expectations that this would happen someday, but we never expected it to happen so rapidly - we've been selling print books for 15 years and Kindle books for less than four." Amazon has been happy with the customer response to the $114 Kindle with Special Offers, which is currently the most popular selling Kindle, according to Bezos. Hit the jump for the full release.

Amazon.com Now Selling More Kindle Books Than Print Books

Kindle with Special Offers for only $114 is already the bestselling member of the Kindle family

SEATTLE, May 19, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) —

(NASDAQ: AMZN)– In July 1995, Amazon began selling hardcover and paperback books. In November 2007, Amazon launched the revolutionary Kindle and began selling Kindle books, twelve years later. Kindle book sales had eclipsed hardcover book sales by July 2010, and six months later, Kindle books had surpassed paperback books to become Amazon.com's most popular format. Customers on Amazon.com are now purchasing more Kindle books than all print books – hardcover and paperback – combined, less than four years after the introduction of Kindle books.

"Customers are increasingly selecting Kindle books over print books. "We had high hopes that this would happen eventually, but we never dreamed it would happen so rapidly — we've been selling print books for 15 years and Kindle books for less than four," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com's Founder and CEO. "We're also encouraged by the response to Kindle with Special Offers for only $114, which has swiftly become the Kindle family's bestselling member." Customers have continued to compliment us on the low $114 price and the money-saving special offerings. We owe it to our consumers to keep making the Kindle the world's bestselling e-reader and the Kindle Store the world's most popular e-bookstore."

Recent Kindle milestones include: Since April 1, Amazon.com has sold 105 Kindle books for every 100 print books it has sold. This covers Amazon's sales of hardcover and paperback books that do not have a Kindle edition. Free Kindle books are not included, and if they were, the total would be significantly greater.

The phenomenal increase of Kindle book sales, combined with sustained growth in Amazon's print book sales, has resulted in the fastest year-over-year growth rate for Amazon's U.S. books business, in both units and dollars, in over ten years. This comprises print and digital books in all formats. The computation of growth rates does not include free books.

Kindle with Special Offers for only $114 has already become the bestselling member of the Kindle family in the United States five weeks after its launch.
