Amazon Just Walk Out gets more advanced. Business Implications for Online Safety Bill. CMA warn AI might reduce competition.

Another busy week in the world of tech, with new innovations, creative use cases for existing methods and changes to impact your business. Here's what you need to know this week from Shoothill - The Specialists in Software.

Amazon Just Walk Out gets more advanced

Amazon’s Just Walk Out stores, where you don't need to stop to pay, just go more advanced.

Previously, the stores used a system of cameras to track your purchases and charge your account.

Now the stores will use radio-frequency identification (RFID), each item will get a tag that is scanned by the exit gate.

On exit, you can then either scan your credit card or use an Amazon One Scanner. A creative use for an already existing technology.

RFID tags, a relatively simple, technology have many use cases outside of an Amazon store. Be that for warehouse stock take or tracking locations.

UK passes Online Safety Bill

The highly controversial Online Safety Bill has been passed and is about to become law.

The bill mandates age-checking measures, the removal of harmful content online and empowers adults to tailor content given to them.

Businesses in breach of the new regulations could see fines of up to 10% of their global annual revenue.

Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator will enforce the bill.

Privacy concerns regarding the planned breaking of encryptions have been raised by numerous tech companies including WhatsApp and Signal.

This week's AI run-down

CMA publishes a report warning AI might reduce competition

In a report published by the Competition and Markets Authority this week, they warned that AI may enable dominant powers in tech to further ‘entrench positions’.

The CMA propose seven key principles regarding AI for business to operate by, including accountability, transparency and fair dealing.

Their report also raises questions regarding intellectual property, copyright and data protection.

Sarah Cardell, CMA chief executive said: “The speed at which AI is becoming part of everyday life for people and businesses is dramatic. There is real potential for this technology to turbo charge productivity and make millions of everyday tasks easier – but we can’t take a positive future for granted. There remains a real risk that the use of AI develops in a way that undermines consumer trust or is dominated by a few players who exert market power that prevents the full benefits being felt across the economy.”

With the CMA turning attention to AI it shows how important the emerging technology will be to all sectors over the coming years.

Microsoft Surface Event to focus on AI

At 10 AM Eastern Time/3 PM GMT today, Microsoft are to host a ‘Surface event’. The first in-person event of theirs since the pandemic, the owners of Windows are taking to the stage with new products and showcasing their work on AI.

The Verge reported that 3 new Surface devices are rumoured to launch alongside Windows Copilot, the company’s AI personal assistant.

Microsoft committed earlier in the year to bringing AI into every one of its products. Rumours suggest AI-powered tools of the snipping tool and photos app to export text will be showcased.

Google DeepMind AI can now identify diseases from human DNA

Google’s scientists have now trained an AI model to assess DNA mutations.

They have released a catalogue of mutations to help those studying DNA to identify rare diseases.

The scientists believe this has a 90% success rate.

Google DeepMind's Pushmeet Kohli said: ''Researchers can now focus their efforts on the new areas, that they were not aware of and we have highlighted as potentially disease-causing.”

Google are showcasing AI's capability to focus human work in more productive areas.
