Amazon raises the limit for backend keywords from 250 bytes to 500 characters

Amazon allows sellers to add backend keywords, also known as search terms, to improve the discoverability of their products. These search terms do not appear on your product page itself where shoppers can see it. This allows you to optimize your product page for searches while keeping your listing content focused, engaging and readable for customers.

A good example of this is adding backend keywords in Spanish to a listing that is entirely in English, or synonyms of your product’s use case, benefits, user persona, etc. This helps you with lexical indexation in Amazon’s search engine for these relevant terms if someone is searching in Spanish language and you want to appear for those keywords. Think of it as extra surface area to boost your exposure.

For several years now the limit has been a hard cap at 250 bytes per row and there are 5 rows. This field is category-dependent but generally speaking, that's the format that we all understand.

This recent change was spotted in some categories and with newer products in the US marketplace. The limit has been upped to 500 characters per row giving us way more room to add additional keywords.?

There is some nerdy clarification we have to do here to fully explain the change so get ready ??. Amazon specifies the length limits of the backend keywords in terms of bytes which is one of the fundamental elements of computing, a piece of information consisting of 8 bits. In the wording I’ve seen around the new change, they are talking about written (typed) characters. A character is often one byte in size but this is not always the case. In many languages around the world, a character may take up multiple bytes. For example, Chinese and Japanese characters often take up 3, and the Arabic alphabet is full of symbols that take up 2 or 3. Even Amongst European languages the Czech ? or Polish ? both take up 2 bytes. You can check how many bytes are in a character with a simple online tool like this.

All that is to say if Amazon is only talking about character limit instead of bytes, they have dramatically simplified this making it far easier for us all. No more counting byte by byte!

Amazon Category Referral Fees & How to Get Ungated

Struggling with Amazon's gated categories? Well, you’re not the only one. Many sellers face the hurdle of broadening their product range and entering new markets via gated categories. These categories are part of Amazon's over 30 product categories available for third-party sellers, each with different referral fees. Gated categories are distinct because they require additional documentation and/or certifications for sellers to be approved to sell in.

Besides that, Amazon also offers ungated categories, which are open to all sellers who meet basic requirements and have a registered Amazon account. This makes ungated categories a more accessible starting point for new sellers or those looking to expand without the immediate need for additional approvals. To get a full understanding of gated categories and how you can leverage them, as well as explore the opportunities in ungated categories, tap on the link below.

Google Ends Cloud Switching Fees, Pressuring Amazon and Microsoft

What do you think the major cloud-computing providers have in common? Getting you in a sticky situation. That's right. Their restrictive contracting terms and licensing practices have been compared to a rat trap or a roach motel. That means once you get in, it’s hard to get yourself out if you decide to switch to a different provider. And if you do, be prepared to pay hefty data transfer fees. However, Google Cloud recently announced that it will be ditching the data transfer fees altogether if you decide on making a switch. This move is indeed Google Cloud’s way of advocating for cloud customers while taking on major players like Microsoft and AWS. Click on the link below to know more about the implications of this development and the cloud computing war that has just begun.
