Amazon Athena - The Definitive Guide in 2022

Analyze Your Data More Quickly and at a Reduced Cost: Amazon Athena

This is a complete guide for technical and non-technical audience passionate about Cloud, AWS and Data Analytics

In this in-depth guide you’ll learn:

  • How to Athena works with other AWS services,
  • What feature Amazon Athena have,
  • How companies benefit from Athena,
  • Lots more

So if you’re ready to go get started with Data Analytic, this guide is for you.

Let’s dive right in.

Amazon Athena is an interactive query service that makes it easy to analyze your data in Amazon S3 using standard SQL without the need to install or manage servers and clusters.

What is Amazon Athena used for?

Athena assists you in analyzing data stored in Amazon S3 that is unstructured, semi-structured, or structured. You can use Athena to conduct ad-hoc ANSI SQL queries without having to aggregate or load the data into Athena.

For quick data visualization, Athena works with Amazon QuickSight. It may be used to produce reports or to study data using business intelligence tools or SQL clients that are linked through a JDBC or an ODBC driver.

Athena works with the AWS Glue Data Catalog, which provides a permanent metadata repository on Amazon S3 for your data. This enables you to construct tables and query data in Athena based on a centralized metadata store available throughout your Amazon Web Services account and connected with AWS Glue's ETL and data discovery functionalities.

For more information see AWS Service Integrations with Athena for a list of AWS services that Athena uses or integrates with.

What features does Amazon Athena have?

  • Serverless: Amazon Athena is serverless, no infrastructure is required. As your datasets and user count grow, so will the configuration and software changes.
  • Easy to Query: Athena uses Presto, a distributed SQL query engine designed for low-latency data processing. Athena supports a wide variety of data formats, such as CSV, JSON, ORC, Avro, or Parquet.
  • Pay Per Query: You only pay for the queries you perform when using Amazon Athena. Calculate your Amazon Athena cost use.
  • Fast Performance: Athena conducts searches in parallel, so you can obtain query responses in seconds, even on enormous datasets.
  • Secure: Amazon Athena uses AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies, access control lists (ACLs), and Amazon S3 package policies.
  • Federated Query: Athena allows you to run SQL queries between data stored in relational, non-relational, object, and custom data sources.
  • Machine Learning: Anyone with SQL experience can use Athena to run distributed machine learning models on Amazon SageMaker.

What are the limitations of Amazon Athena?

  • The scope of optimization is restricted to queries. Data already saved in S3, for example, cannot be optimized.
  • There are no indexing options available. Traditional databases frequently have indexing options. The operation load on Athena rises without indexing, potentially harming performance.
  • Athena can time out when querying a table with thousands of partitions.
  • The maximum row and column size is 32 megabytes.

Which companies use Amazon Athena?

Movable Ink, Atlassian, OLX, LiveIntent, JWPlayer, MParticle, Nasdaq, Tune

How does Amazon Athena benefit companies?

Movable Ink: Movable Ink uses Amazon Athena to query seven years of historical data and obtain responses in seconds, with the ability to drill down into the data for more information.

Atlassian: Atlassian used Amazon Athena and other AWS Analytics services to create a self-service data lake.

OLX: By integrating Athena across their enterprise, OLX was able to save costs and enhance time to market.
