Amazed at the things I need to learn over and over again as a leader
I put on my generic sweats, hoodie, and earbuds then headed out for my Saturday morning jog, following my normal route through a suburban business district with good sidewalks. I jog daily, basically hating every minute of it, and boy does it show - poetry in motion I am not. I passed people walking their dogs, fellow joggers (or rather, they passed me), and a group of three young men doing landscaping for an office building. I nodded & waved as I went by because I'm midwestern and that's what we do.
The day was cold and I hadn't slept enough and well... jogging sucks, so as I looped back around my route I knew that I wasn't going to make my full mileage for the day. What. Ever.
I hit the bottom of the hill that marks the beginning of my last scheduled mile and thought it was a good place to stop. As I rounded the corner I saw the three young landscapers again, sitting in the grass on their lunch break. All three were looking at me and I could see that their mouths were moving, so I yanked out my earbuds curious as to what they were saying.
They were singing the Rocky theme, to me.
I grinned like an idiot, fatigue vanished, and took that hill at possibly my best speed ever. Hit my number for the day and then some.
Who needs me to sing to them today? Who’s “going the distance” but doesn’t think they’ll make it? Where will a few seconds of random silliness alter the path of someone’s life? Thanks guys.

3 年Great Story, Brent. Goes to show that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places, and we all need a cheerleader every once in a while. Hope you are doing well!

3 年Jogging is good, and when I can find then I prefer the trails.
