The Amateur -vs- The Professional

The Amateur -vs- The Professional

Recently I read a fascinating essay and recognizing it would be helpful to everyone in an online group I belong to, I shared it with them.

A millennial in the group responded INSTANTLY saying “This takes data too far! I just wanna laugh.”

Her 9 simple words illustrate the difference between professionals and amateurs in every industry…

Amateurs just want to laugh.

Professionals recognize data holds the clues to success.

Amateurs just want to be entertained.

Professionals read (a lot). Because knowledge is power.

Amateurs want instant gratification.

Professionals practice patience and discipline.

Amateurs are just recreational players.

Professionals are students of the game and “in it to win it”.

Amateurs practice until they begin to get “a little bored”

Professionals practice until they get it right and then practice some more until they can’t get it wrong.

Amateurs think things will “fall into place”.

Professionals study form and structure.

Amateurs think they can just “visualize” results and the universe will make them appear.

Professionals reverse-engineer success step by step.

Amateurs are know it alls.

Professionals are learn it alls.

Amateurs focus on appearances.

Professionals let their resume speak for itself.

Amateurs talk.

Professionals listen.

Amateurs trust words.

Professionals know better and only trust actions.

Amateurs make promises.

Professionals make commitments.

Amateurs talk about how hard they work.

Professionals are quietly the first in and last out.

Amateurs hope.

Professionals prepare.

Amateurs focus on the outcome.

Professionals focus on the process.

Amateurs wonder what happened.

Professionals make things happen.

I can’t emphasize enough the great things that happen when you commit to showing up professionally every day in the lives of the people you serve. It’s why I send this email DAILY.

I also don’t think it’s possible for you to fully understand the impact you’ll have on their lives until you actually put the work in to experience it yourself.

It’s probably why I often hear from people who talk about starting a new business or growing an existing business. Keyword= Talk. I heard from some today, last week, last month and even last year. Yet amazingly they still haven’t committed to doing the work. Amateurs.

The best way to stay stuck is to think you’ve got to have it all figured out before you get started. That’s not so at all. Its actually a sure fire way to make sure you never get anywhere.

What do professionals do?

  • Take action.
  • Pick an audience.
  • Create a resource that can help them.
  • Commit to delivering it to them on a consistent basis.

Want an example of that? You’re already reading it.

If that isn’t enough, there are dozens of examples of leaders who are committed professionals in my Yesterday’s Underdog community.

Want bigger, better results? Surround yourself with professionals with huge goals who are committed to the same mission as you.

They’re right here waiting to meet you. But only if you’re a professional. Amateurs need not apply…
