“Am I worrying too much?"

“I want my child to grow in their social interactions, and I know that they are eager (if a little anxious) to go to school—but I’m worried. My son has always needed more help with his development than other kids his age. I don’t want him to be a target for bullying.

What should I do? Am I doing the typical parent thing and over-thinking this?”

Hi, Daniella!

First off—no, you’re not over-thinking at all. Every parent, even those whose children aren’t neurodivergent, worries about how their son or daughter will be received at school. I can speak from first-hand experience!

Sending your kids off to school for the first time is difficult. It’s the first time for many parents that the kids are leaving the nest without them. To make yourself feel better, here’s what I’d recommend.

  1. Talk to your child’s teacher about your concerns. If possible, ask if a learning aide can come in just to make sure your child is getting the right level of care and attention.
  2. Let your child know that you’re in their corner if they ever feel bullied or shamed at school. You can’t control how other kids behave, but you can make sure your own child feels supported.
