Am I just getting old or has the world gone "Delulu"?!

As I much as I am in denial about being in my early 40s, I increasingly find myself wondering - has the world gone "delulu" or am I just getting old?
?For context, "delulu" is slang for being delusional or detached from reality. I only recently stumbled across this term (via a LinkedIn trending topic) and realized...I have no idea if this is common knowledge or another sign I'm losing touch!
My perspective is shaped by coming of age as the personal computer and internet were emerging. The world seems to move so quickly now with the proliferation of social media, advancements in tech and AI, and the constant onslaught of information. I also grew up at a time when the UK at least wasn't tuned into the importance of mental health. But I now increasingly find myself struggling with cognitive overload and anxiety about everything that is going on.
?So many current events make me scratch my head as they just seem bonkers and the world is upside down. Increasing inequality and cost of living, polarisation of society over political issues like Brexit, the insanity of the war in Ukraine, our disconnection with nature (yet we are very much biological beings reliant on the ecosystem around us), sustainability and climate change. I don't recall the world feeling this chaotic, unstable or incomprehensible when I was younger.
?Is "permacrisis" a new thing - or are we just aware of our collective challenges these days?

?But is it the world that's gone delulu? Or is it just my own rigidifying perspective? Perhaps at a certain age, we all struggle to adapt to changing cultural tides and news cycles?
?While I don't have answers, I hope reflecting openly on this feeling of disconnect resonates with others. We all must find ways to understand each other across generations and adapt to rapidly changing eras.
?I invite perspectives from my connections from across generations on how you perceive this cultural moment. Help me gain insight into the worldview of those outside my bubble.
?Do you have things that you've found work to help navigate these chaotic times? At what age did you start to feel out of sync with the world? Are we all just becoming delulu?
BTW the topic of how in touch we are with reality (the main thrust of the #delulu thing) is another post in itself for another time - an important part of self awareness.
In compliance with the Claude 2 terms and conditions - full disclosure Claude helped me articulate and edit this piece. Although that didn't stop me making a typo in the original headline (maybe as I decided to come up with that myself?!)

1 年The World started going Mad when the Cuban missile crisis started then that idiot fool called Nixon Buged the Watergate Hotel. This planet has gone down the tubes ever since. But it isn't just the U.S. but all over Isreal and all the lies they tell to the Palestinians, Algeria, Somalia, Sudan, and Drug Cartels in South America...where have you been? Bush, and Reagan, were idiots x 5 and Putin is a sociopath. African leaders who believed in corruption and did not do anything to uplift lives in those countries. Take your damn pick...North Korea and a little Toad called Kim, Xi, who thinks he's going to reshape the world as he wants it...what a clown this guy is. Myanmar, Indonesia, and the constant fires of the world's precious rainforests and natural habitats have all gone (Amazon, Borneo). You can take your pick. People are getting more and more pissed off with all BS from governments and it is not going to get any better. A major War is in the wind like it or not. Ukraine is just an appetizer. Human morality is out the door...Job discrimination is at an all-time high because we let AI or predetermined computer programs seal our fate in the job market. Compassion was a word that once had meaning. You opened up pandora's box...
Well i am.early 50's. Lol.. Slightly different angle from me here i do not feel out of place. Buzz words maybe but I have only recently started to appreciate just how much invalueable experience I have (sub consciously) gathered over the years that I completely took for granted. I work in a young progressive workplace which i love and I do not feel out of place. Embrace what you bring tp the table. For example you can't teach common sense or gut feeling....things that I feel come more naturally to me but maybe cannot be taught. It freaks my colleagues out when I tell them I left school at 16
"I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies: 1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works. 2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it. 3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things." Douglas Adams

1 年I think you get disconnected when you have children older than 16 which is my case actually. But I would say that this apparent disconnection is not really happening because, when you think about it, the trick is that as you grow old, time last longer and you can take a break and think about what is happening, do teenagers do the same, I wonder. So yes, everything goes faster everyday but that's life! Progress happens in shorter cycle times. And you keep up because you can rely on younger colleagues that will show you their views on this or that matter. Thus, I would say Oliver Cronk that in fact nobody gets disconnected except architects in their ivory tower ??.
