Today, we got a question from a guy that feels he may be getting scammed by a roofing company, and wonders if he should throw the letter away, or act on it. He may be surprised at my answer.
Dave asks:
"I got another letter from a roofing company warning me that my roof needs attention after a hailstorm we had several years ago. I don't see any damage. Is this standard for roofing companies looking for work, or should I pay attention to this letter?"
Now, that's pretty standard. I would say a lot of roofing companies do mailings, but I will also tell you that they do their due diligence when they do their mailings.
They actually target neighborhoods based on weather patterns and damage that has happened.
Should you pay attention to it?
I would say, yes, because really you have nothing to lose to have a roofing company come out to your house, assess your roof, and tell you if they think you can reach out to your insurance company and get a claim.
If they want to do the work, I would let them because it's only a couple of calls.
The adjuster for your insurance company might have to come out, obviously, if there's a claim. You will have to pay the deductible so it could affect your insurance a little bit. But usually these roofing companies are really good about negotiating new roofs.
So definitely look into it. There's a reason they sent you the letter. And as long as it's not going to cost any money or time out of your pocket, what do you have to lose?
