I was recently counseling someone and learned that they felt that everyone around them--everyone they were working with--was a jerk. He couldn't understand why everyone was constantly so hostile, so rude. I shared a little parable that I'm fond of.
If during your day you encounter one person who is an ass and the rest of your day is great, then that person is a ass. But if you wake up in the morning and everyone you meet is a ass, then you're the ass.
I love this little pearl.
In short, if you find that everyone you interact with is seemingly being rude or hostile with you, you're the common denominator. It likely means that you're doing something that is setting off everyone you interact with. It's a good reminder that if you're constantly having bad meetings or bad interactions with others, you need to start with some self-assessment: what are you doing that's causing or contributing to this?
Is it me? Am I causing everyone to react a certain way? Can I change something about my interaction with others that will break the pattern and enhance my interactions with others? Reddit has a forum where people post situations they've been in and as A.I.T.A., or "Am I The A**hole?" This little parable is sort of like the interpersonal version of AITA. Self awareness goes a long ways.
