Am I Coachable?

Most people and businesses recognise that coaching plays an important part in development, however encouraging self/ employees to take up coaching opportunities seems to be hindered by a fear that those approached to take advantage of coaching may see it as performance management – as if something is wrong.
This can be so damaging to both the potential of employees and the businesses available skill set. When blind spots are allowed to develop by fear of giving feedback and encouraging somebody to be their best – it often leads to performance issues. Coaching is a way of being proactive in encouraging employees to learn more about themselves, enhance their skills sets and thrive for the organisation they work for.
How many promotions, pay rises are missed out on and how many misunderstandings and in mediation and tribunal which could be avoided through the process of coaching?
What does it mean to be coachable?
If you are coachable, you will be willing to take ownership and be held to account for your behaviour and thoughts. You will be looking to find a coach who will guide and support you in increasing your levels of self-awareness and who will challenge you.
Not everybody is suited for coaching – in order to benefit from the process, the coachee needs to be receptive to feedback, and actively willing to seek it out to further their development and act upon constructive feedback they receive.
The most coachable of us are people with what we call a growth mindset. By having a growth mindset, you open yourself up to learning new things using feedback as a strength of self-empowerment and further development. In the reverse someone with a fixed mindset is likely to see coaching as a form of weakness or an admission that they are not good enough, when in reality it shows strength, dedication and an investment in your own future.
So here are my top tips for being the best coachee you can be:
1. Be interested in self-awareness – it is so important to understand how we behave, how we impact other people, what motivates us, our habits, our strengths, our weaknesses and many other aspects of what drives us
2. Willingness to learn – nobody knows everything, a healthy curiosity is key to developing and transforming into a better version of ourselves.
3. Take responsibility – not everything is always someone else’s fault, being coachable is about understanding your part in every interaction, accepting that sometimes the change lies with you, controlling your emotions and thoughts and being held accountable by yourself before others.
4. Willing to take action – people who are action orientated and willing to take steps to change will inevitably benefit more from coaching than people who wish to remain where they are. A coach cannot make your journey for you, they are there to guide and support you.
5. Having a vision – having a goal to work towards, being inspired by accomplishments and being able to look to the future and have ambition is critical.
Remember that we may find ourselves being coachable or uncoachable in different scenarios. We may be fully open to being coached at work but closed off when it comes to our relationships. Considering yourself uncoachable in one area of life does not rule you out for any kind of coaching and self-development.
So, here’s the question: are you coachable?
Do you see the value in investing in yourself and your future in order to secure balance, prosperity and confidence in all aspects of your life?
If you are – then what are you waiting for?
Telling yourself it’s not the right time means you’ll never find the right time, and intern be the person who continues to miss out on opportunities the other people are benefiting from.
For more information on how to make now the ‘right time for you’, email me at [email protected] today or book a call by clicking here.
Once you’ve done that, sit back and reward yourself for being someone who does!!! J
