Alzheimer’s Memory Walk 2023: “Being a leader of a walk is a great chance to put your hand up and feel like you are making a real contribution.”

Head of Advocacy, Research, and Public Affairs at The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Cormac Cahill MPRII is set to lead the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk in Luttrellstown Castle Resort , Dublin on Sunday, September 24th.?

Please tell us a bit about your work with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI)

My job is having oversight of the ASI’s advocacy, research, policy, and communications and to work alongside some external stakeholders such as Alzheimer Europe and the National Dementia Office to increase public awareness of dementia in Ireland and further afield.

What do you like most about your job?

I love working with our wonderful team which collectively promotes the voice of people living with dementia and family carers, whether that is through our advocacy, research, or communications work. My team’s dedication, hard work and innovation are a wonder to behold!?

I also love talking to people who live with dementia and family carers and hearing about their experiences. When the team helps to make a difference with a big launch, a great campaign, or a big media piece, especially in the political arena, I really feel like we are creating change and improving things for those affected by dementia. This is very, very satisfying.??

What makes ASI special?

There is a wonderful team spirit across the charity and a can-do attitude. The staff and branch members and volunteers are so committed to their roles and helping people and I find it a positive place to work. You also get to work with so many people from different parts of the country who are doing such great work. People really care and we see that in the selfless way people go about their work in helping others.?

The ASI is about promoting the voice of people who are either living with the condition or are caring for someone; I think this is very special to have it so central to the organisation. ??

Why did you join Alzheimer’s Memory Walk 2023 as a local Champion?

Memory Walk is our most special event of the year when so many people of all ages and abilities come together to raise much-needed funds and awareness for people with dementia. Being a leader of a walk is a great chance to put your hand up and feel like you are making a real contribution. People with dementia and their carers can often get forgotten about in our society. I hope I can create a walk where people feel included and where everyone feels they are making a difference.

?What is your favourite time of day to walk?

I love walking in the evening, usually with our dog, Belle.

Who will you be walking for on September 24th?

One of our amazing advocates and a founding member of our IDWG, Seamus Cunningham, sadly passed away in June. Seamus was a true gent. I met Seamus at an IDWG meeting just after I joined the ASI in April 2017, and he was so helpful and kind – he helped to show me the ropes!

Where is your favourite place to walk?

Dollymount Strand on a summer morning is very hard to beat!

What makes Alzheimer’s Memory Walk special?

There is a tremendous sense of community spirit and particularly with so many families who come together. It’s very special because different generations come together and there is so much goodwill on the day. People in Ireland are great at coming together and we have a real sense of community, it’s so rewarding to see this come together and for people with dementia to be at the centre of it.
