Always stop to make sure people are all right

On my way in I took hwy 55. As I slowed down to stop by Queen ave I saw something out of the corner of my eye in my rearview mirror. It was a mother about my age getting hit by a car while riding her bike across 55. Her son who was about 7 had just gotten across safe. I opened my car door to hear screaming and crying. The lady was laying on the road in front of the car that hit her, she did not get up. Right away I called 911 and had an argument with the dispatcher about what city I was in. Slowly about 6 cars pulled over and put their flashers on. I walked over to the kid and helped him call his dad who showed up about 5 min after the ambulance. What struck me was all of the people who actually stopped and got out of their cars. This was 8 am on a workday. A busy commuter road and a handful of business dress people standing around a hit biker trying to help. I could have and so could they have just as easily have kept on going to work and just figured it was someone else's problem. I really love our community

I texted the kid's dad later in the day that I was praying for them. He asked who it was and I said I was the person who saw the accident and called 911. He thanked me for calling and for caring. 2 lessons - always wear your helmet. I think the mom is going to be ok after she is out of the ER for checking. - we should always stop to make sure people are all right. (This was 5 years ago today but still rings true)
