Always simplify your data, Tom Brady is the GOAT
Tom Brady is proof there is no such thing as the perfect metric. In my world, people will talk about conversion rates or ROAS/ ACoS or some other great metric. But none of them are.
Look, Brady has won seven - 7 - Super Bowls! Super Bowl MVP 5 times. The next closest? Charles Haley, who played on the defensive line for the Cowboys and 49ers won 5. For QBs? Joe Montana won 4. So Brady has almost double the number of Super Bowl wins over Joey Montana. What about just playoff wins? Montana - 16, John Elway - 14…. Tom Brady - 34.
The stats go on and on. And yet, despite the dominance of Brady in the statistical categories, many people do not consider him the greatest to ever play QB.
Why? Because there is always a way to find some statistic that supports your point of view. And it is because of this, I think it is critical that we look to simplify what we are looking at. Try asking yourself these questions:
- What is the objective of the asset you are considering?
- What’s the purpose of achieving that objective/ why does it matter?
- What are the 2 or 3 metrics that are most closely connected to that outcome and purpose?
Eg: Who is the best QB to ever play in the NFL?
- What is the objective of the asset you are considering?
a.The objective of the QB is to win games
- What’s the purpose of achieving that objective/ why does it matter?
a. Winning games is what allows you to win the Super Bowl
- What are the 2 or 3 metrics that are most closely connected to that outcome and purpose?
a. Games Won
a. Super Bowls Won
Simplify things. Don’t get caught up staring at the Pythagorean theorem of edge cases and suddenly convince yourself that is the world as it is. More often than not, the simplest explanation is the right one. So start by simplifying the data you care about.
