Is Remote Work A Pantomime Of Productivity?
Using the words "work" and "home" in the same sentence usually stirs up a mixture of delight and disapproval – in almost equal parts. In sharp contrast, a mere mention of the concept of remote work plunges an increasing number of bosses into a sense of "productivity paranoia."
Productivity paranoia refers to a boss's heightened suspicion, skepticism or speculation that their employees are not being as productive while working from home, in a local coffee shop, or co-working space.
The trending phenomenon, which sits alongside a bundle of other buzzwords generated by our workplace behaviors so far this year (think: quiet quitting, quiet firing, loud leadership), was revealed in Microsoft's latest Work Trend Index. The index declared that 87% of workers thought they were just as productive – if not more so – when working from home. At the same time, only 12% of bosses felt fully confident that those working remotely were as productive as those sitting behind their desks in the office.
While employees work harder than ever, bosses simply do not believe them. In fact, some bosses label the practice of working from home as nothing short of a pantomime of productivity. At the heart of the kerfuffle between managers and remote-operating staff is the questionable assumption that workers are more productive when they are under the watchful eye of their supervisor.
Yet being in the office does not guarantee productivity.
Some workers fake productivity by appearing busy online, staying back late to keep up appearances, participating in endless purposeless meetings, engaging in superficial conversations with colleagues or making mountains out of molehills to portray an essence of efficiency.
It is hard to explain why productivity paranoia has risen to such highs among managers. Organizations afflicted with productivity paranoia are likely to suffer the consequences. What every boss needs to realize is employees have fully embraced flexible work and that means remote work is here to stay. It will require those with productivity paranoia to shift their mindset from one locked into "I can't see you, so I don't know what you are up to" to a different way of thinking which asks remote workers "do you have everything you need to get your job done?".

Remote Work Saves Global Commuters 72 Minutes A Day
Working from home is saving commuters around the world 72 minutes a day, time they're splitting between their jobs, leisure and caregiving, a new study shows.
Remote staff are saving the most time in China, where forgoing the trek to and from one's workplace is freeing up 102 minutes a day, according to the study published this month by the National Bureau of Economic Research. Serbian workers saw the smallest savings of 51 minutes, while those in the US also saw a comparatively low 55 minutes spared.
The team of economists from Europe, Mexico and the US —including Stanford University's Nicholas Bloom — calculated daily commute times from surveys of workers across 27 countries in the past two years. When accounting for those who never worked remotely in that time period, the economists estimate that work-from-home saved about two hours of travel time per worker per week.
That amounts to 2.2% of a 46-hour workweek, with 40 paid hours plus six hours of commuting, the paper found. As such, the private value of the time savings is around 2.2% of after-tax earnings in the post-pandemic economy.
"Commuters strongly dislike unpredictable travel times, and automobile drivers strongly dislike congested road conditions," the economists said. "Thus, long commutes, unpredictable commute times, and congested road conditions push the private value of time savings above the after-tax wage." Likewise, the inverse is true.
Workers are hardly sloughing off. Businesses are the biggest beneficiaries of the travel time savings, with workers devoting 40% of their saved time toward primary and secondary jobs. About a third went toward leisure activities and 11% went to caregiving, the study found.

Work From Home Or The Office? Half Of Companies Don't Know
Decisions around returning to the office should be based on fact, not anecdotal evidence, says real estate management services firm Colliers. According to a survey by real estate management services company Colliers, more than half of Canadian companies don't know whether to keep working from home, go back to the office or adopt a hybrid policy.
"It is an experiment," said John Duda, president, real estate management services for Colliers on The Sam Laprade Show. According to Duda an overwhelming majority of management wants to see workers return to the office, whereas workers want the total opposite.
Ultimately, the decision will come down to productivity and culture.

"Over time, what it will mean is whether or not a business is being productive and whether or not they can maintain success. Those are things that businesses are going to be measuring in more detail," said Duda. "Both these things are critical to the long-term success of any business."

Bali Digital Nomad Visa in the Works
The Bali Digital Nomad Visa is the new digital nomad visa program that is currently said to be in its initial planning stages. With this new visa, Indonesia is looking to attract travelers that will stay longer and spend more than regular tourists.
According to the tourism minister of Indonesia, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, the move will bring 3.6 million travelers to Indonesia.
Let's see in detail what this visa is and how it differs from other digital nomad visas around the world. The new Bali Digital Nomad Visa, which is still in progress, will allow remote workers to live and work tax-free in Indonesia for up to five years.
As with most permits, certain conditions have to be fulfilled to be eligible for this visa. For example, you must have proof of a foreign or international income to be eligible for this program and can't work for a local company. This requirement is there to ensure that you do not compete with the local talent.
