"Always be humble and kind" - Tim McGraw
There is a personal story that I have been intending to share for quite a while.
I feel vulnerable sharing it, which is a good reason to do it!
...
Tim McGraw recently came out with the song "Always be humble and kind" I identify with Tim McGraw, because we are about the same age and both have daughters. When he sang this song, he apparently kept crying and I can identify with the emotion. In many ways, I don't like being emotional, but I guess it is what makes me real, even though it is counter to human consciousness that has developed the value that men should not show emotion.
Anyway - the story
There is a line in the song "Visit Grandpa every chance that you get to ... it won't be wasted time". Well that line inspired me to visit one of my aunts. "Zia Maria" has always been special to me. She lost her husband to cancer at 43 years old and raised 7 children on her own. - A really amazing lady.
So I decided that I am not really that busy and woke up on Sunday morning and made a fresh batch of pizza dough and made focaccia. She is in a largely English speaking senior home and misses the home made Italian food. So I visited her, and walked into the room to her total surprise. At first I thought, "Oh My God" she has gone down hill so much, but it wasn't the case. She had just been sleeping and I was the last person in the world that she expected to see. She thought she was dreaming! I was planning to visit for a half hour and was there for three.- definitely not wasted time - The smile on her face when I left made it all worth while.
I was proud of myself and I shared it with Vasanth, a friend that works with me. Vasanth has an uncle from Sri Lanka, but he visits almost every day!!
I realized that there is still much work to do ....
Tim McGraw - Thank you for the inspiration and I am sure that you would be happy to know that your song and life work inspired such actions.

8 年When I read your story, once again I feel guilty why I didn't visit my lovely grandmother and uncle enough, unfortunately they passed away 10 years ago and I couldn't show my love and respect to them properly. Being "too busy" is unacceptable excuse. We lose valuable things in our life to gather some small things, and what makes it worse that we can't compensate most of them when we reach to this wisdom. Thank you for sharing your story.
