The problem - Facing a crisis or an opportunity , leaders often fall back on the leadership style that has worked for them in the past. But to be effective, they need to rise above their default reactions and generate more options for how to respond in real time.
A new model offers a "four stances" to help?#leaders?generate options for interpersonal communication. Leaders should identify which?#stance?is their default, make a plan using alternatives. Lets discuss four stance.
#Stance?1 --Lean In (deciding , directing, guiding, challenging, confronting)
*When to use* -- people seem rudderless, need to energise, chaotic situations.
*When not to use* -- when people are quite down, when people don't offer counter opinions.
#Stance?2 --Lean Back (Collecting data, analyzing, asking questions)
*When to use* -- When people need more information, when emotions are running high and more data will help dealing with situation.
*When not to use*- Team discussions reach diminishing returns, when more data is obfuscating rather than clarifying thinking.

#Stance?3 -- Lean With (Coaching, empathezing , encouraging)
*When to use*- When morale is low, when you notice how a smile or an affirming remark energise someone.
*When not to use* - When a team member needs space to think
#Stance?4 -- Don't Lean (Contemplating, Being still, visualising, breathing)
*When to use* - When team members need to work something out of their own and your presence may be an intrusion or slow their progress, when team is frenetic and need a break.
*When not to use* - When the team is looking for guidance or in action mode)
Managing interpersonal relationships requires keen observation skills in real time and the ability to self - regulate in stressful situations. But leader has to acknowledge that the approach they follow should not b e the same. Just as most enduring organizations are?#agile?and?#adaptable?, so too are the?#best #leaders.
