There Will Always Be An England!
Today is Saint George’s Day - the patron saint of England
The anniversary of his death in 23 April 303 is seen as England's national day. Very little is known about the real St George. He is thought to have been born into a noble Christian family in the late third century in Cappadocia, an area which is now in Turkey. He followed his father's profession of soldier and became part of the retinue of the Emperor Diocletian. The emperor ordered the systematic persecution of Christians and George refused to take part. In 303, he was himself tortured and executed in Palestine, becoming an early Christian martyr.
The legend of George slaying a dragon and rescuing an innocent maiden from death is medieval. St George's Day is celebrated in England on 23 April, reputed to be the day of George's martyrdom in 303.
Saint George is also the patron saint of Georgia and the city of Moscow - but England, first and foremost!

5 年"Saint George is also the patron saint of Georgia and the city of Moscow - but England, first and foremost!" - I don't understand the last bit? Why England, first and foremost?
anything more recent perhaps? btw, shame, to kill some last dragon facing that ... the winter is coming ;)

5 年It's interesting that UK and Russia have a common patron saint whilst we are building nuclear submarines to annhilate each other. Can we not seek some common heritage in old George and use our taxes to clean up the seas?
