There Will Always Be Critics

There Will Always Be Critics

It doesn’t matter how good you are, there will always be critics.

Take for instance Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame voting:

  • 3 people didn’t vote for Ken Griffey Jr
  • 6 didn’t for Nolan Ryan
  • 8 for Cal Ripken Jr
  • 9 for Hank Aaron

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

Someone with a vote decided he’d rather be a critic because of something off-the-field or how an athlete handled an interview than vote one of the best ever into the Hall. And there's zero question that those four players deserve in the Hall.

In fact, only one player ever (Mariano Rivera, 2019) was enshrined with 100% of the votes.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?

I hope it encourages you that even the best ever – those whose work on the field is UNTOUCHABLE – still has their share of haters and critics.

I hope it frees you from the burden of trying to get everyone to like you, to approve of you, or to follow your work - so you can instead simply focus on creating great work, adding more value to your company or community, and improving your craft.

Because let's be honest, you have better things to do than to give your time, energy, or focus to the trolls.

Focus on what you control:

  • Your effort,
  • Your attitude, and
  • Your actions

And block out everything else.

Blinders on. Press onward. Compete Every Day

This is so empowering! Sometimes says more about the critic than the person being criticized, too!

Good advice - as a speaker we get the audience comment forms... I recently scored highest at a multi day event but there was still a comment that was negative

Good advice Jake! Hard to believe some of the voters didn't vote for those players. Can't please everyone. Like you said, focus on what you can control.
