ChatGPT is a very exciting development, and I was intrigued by all the theories about future possibilities – both the optimistic and doomsday viewpoints. For the last couple of days I spent some time to try the platform in my areas of interest e.g. Infrastructure as a Service, Oracle SaaS, PaaS security, college admissions :) and finally basic mathematics while teaching my daughter.

I saw mixed results and one of them just stood out – ChatGPT could not solve simple Compound Interest problems accurately (try some of these sample queries), it did very well in providing direction though.

A key thumbs up for the platform – it learnt simple calculations after a few attempts and providing feedback. Challenge – introducing more variables led to incorrect results e.g. compounding half-yearly and interest also paid half-yearly.

My takeaway - While we look forward to the bright possibilities with Artificial Intelligence (AI), there will always be a corner case and that’s the corner in which humanity will find it’s opportunity to excel!!

These are sample outputs from the compound interest problem statements.

Sample questions to ask and observe:

• Find the time it will take for a principal of 100 to become 300, compounded annually at a rate of interest of 8 percent per annum.
• Find the time it will take for a principal of 100 to become 300, compounded half-yearly at a rate of interest of 7 percent, compound interval as every 6 months
• Find the time it will take for a principal of 100 to become 300, compounded annually at a rate of interest of 10 percent per annum
• Find the time it will take for a principal of 100 to become 300, compounded half-yearly at a rate of interest of 10 percent, compound interval as every 6 months?

PS : I will continue to use the platform where I find value and to supplement my knowledge – at the same time I retain accountability for the output/decisions.
