Alumni Spotlight: Michael Whitney

Michael Whitney, a proud alumnus, has transformed the robotics program at Somerset Oaks Academy into a powerhouse of innovation and competition. Over the past three years, under his guidance, the elementary and middle school VEX IQ teams have flourished. Starting with a modest Build Award, Michael set his sights on bigger achievements, and his teams did not disappoint. They went on to win multiple trophies, including the Teamwork Championship at the South Florida VEX IQ States Competition.

This year, both his elementary and middle school teams secured qualifying awards, earning their place in the prestigious VEX IQ Worlds Competition in Dallas, Texas. The middle school team clinched 2nd place in the Teamwork Championship and proudly brought home the Energy Award, a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Michael’s leadership has not only led to competitive success but has also instilled a deep love for robotics and engineering in his students. Each year brings new challenges with the VEX IQ competition, where students must design, build, and program robots to score points. Michael's commitment to pushing his teams to excel has made him a key figure in their success, and he eagerly anticipates what the future holds for his talented students.

His journey with the robotics program at Somerset Oaks Academy highlights the importance of passion, perseverance, and mentorship in STEM education, setting a shining example for educators and students alike.
