The world food safety day was commemorated on 7th June, 2024 and in its honor, we celebrate Rahel Moges Beyene, Founder and Managing Director of Ethiogreen Production & Industry PLC. Rahel's journey is a story of innovation, resilience, and dedication, showcasing how one leader's vision can transform an industry.
"Food safety is not just a set of rules—it's a lifestyle necessity," says Rahel, an alumna of the Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA). Graduating with a Master of Science in Telecommunications and Networking from George Washington University, Rahel initially built a successful career as a systems and network security engineer at a Fortune 500 company. However, her entrepreneurial spirit and deep connection to her Ethiopian roots inspired a bold career shift. In 2012, Rahel returned to Ethiopia and established Ethiogreen Production & Industry PLC, aiming to produce 100% Teff Injera for both local and international markets.
Ethiogreen's story began with a pioneering effort in the United States, where Rahel and a friend introduced fresh, authentic 100% Teff Injera to the Washington DC metro diaspora. This early success was a springboard for Rahel's mission to offer high-quality, unadulterated Injera to a broader audience. "I believed in transparency and integrity," Rahel reflects. "Consumers deserve to know exactly what they are buying."
Maintaining the purity of her products posed significant challenges. The market was saturated with Injera adulterated with cheaper grains like rice or maize. Despite advice to compromise, Rahel remained steadfast. "I insisted on producing 100% Teff Injera," she explains. "Let the customers choose; we must be transparent about our products." This principle not only defined Ethiogreen's brand but also won the trust and loyalty of consumers who valued genuine quality.
Implementing rigorous food safety standards was a daunting task for a new business, with barriers such as high costs, but Rahel was committed. "Food safety is essential not just for consumer health but also for the environment and long-term sustainability," she asserts.

Rahel's vision extends beyond immediate business goals. She understands the critical role of food safety in protecting future generations, particularly in Ethiopia, where the majority of the population is under 30 years old. "These young consumers rely on produced food, and ensuring its safety is paramount," she emphasizes. Rahel advocates for a holistic approach to food safety, emphasizing the interconnectedness of health, environmental sustainability, and economic viability.
Rahel Moges and Ethiogreen continue to demonstrate the spirit of innovation and commitment necessary to tackle the unexpected challenges of food safety. As we celebrate World Food Safety Day, we honor Rahel Moges and Ethiogreen for their achievements and commitment to a safer, healthier future for all.
