Alumni Profile - Anthony Griffin

BA Photographic Media (2015)

Anthony Griffin studied a BA in Photographic Media with Griffith College, graduating in 2015. Anthony currently runs his own photography business Anthony Griffin Photography.

“I am a full-time, freelance photographer and photo tutor both with class and online adult learners.

I have worked, been published and exhibited in Ireland and internationally. My clients range from individuals, community and State-funded groups, local government, commercial business, marketing companies, and international brands, performance groups and music festivals.

My personal work is predominantly but not limited to the areas of documentary, portraiture and event/PR photography.”

We asked Anthony why he chose to study with Griffith College.

“The course curriculum (modules, subject matter), part-time learning availability and word of mouth. I loved the course. I was a mature, part-time student and in hindsight, even the personal ups and downs actually enhanced my learning, greatly assisted by supportive tutors.”

Anthony was keen to highlight the influential teaching staff at Griffith College and wanted to highlight the industry specific insights he received whilst studying at Griffith College.

“All my lecturers and tutors influenced me to be honest. Naturally, some will be more in line with one’s own self but they were all great, showed and taught me a lot. They were empathetic, supportive, encouraging and pushed me when required.”

Anthony told us about his inspiration behind wanting to study Photography

“What: To take a chance and make a radical change. To learn more and gain additional personal fulfilment.

Who: Those who have gone before me and since, my peers.”

We asked Anthony what his greatest achievement and biggest challenge has been to date.

“Undertaking a part-time degree as a mature student and being awarded an Academic Achievement Award, assisting me in applying my learning to do something I love and assist those who are also learning for which I received a BTEC Tutor of the Year Award in 2019. My biggest challenge has been and remains working as a full-time freelancer.”

We asked Anthony about his future plans.

“To build on both little and large successes and maintain a career in photography.”

Finally we asked Anthony some quick fire questions, asking him the best piece of advice that he had received, a piece of advice for recent graduates, what he would he have done differently if he was a student again and how he would describe Griffith College in three words.

Best piece of advice:

“‘Do better, do different’ – Michael Durand, Journalism & Media Communications, Associate Lecturer. I received loads of advice from all GCD staff. This stuck in my head and I have borrowed Michael’s quote and frequently pass it on!”

Advice for recent graduates:

“Work efficiently, continue to listen and learn and if necessary, reserve a humble confidence.”

Starting out as a student again what would you have done differently?

“I would have worried less.”
