Aluminum foil has become a ubiquitous packaging material in homes and commercial operations. Its light weight, good ductility, and oxygen and moisture barrier properties make it a first choice for packaging a variety of food and consumer goods. Laminated aluminum foil for flexible packaging
As a standalone sheet, aluminum foil has some weaknesses as a packaging substrate. To address these limitations and extend its functionality, aluminum foil is often laminated with other materials such as plastic film or cardboard. This lamination process bonds aluminum foil composites, taking advantage of the best properties of each material.
For flexible packaging, the industry standard is laminated aluminum foil composite rolls produced on high-speed roll lamination lines. Here, the foil is continuously unrolled from a large giant coil and bonded to a carrier film, paper or other foil via adhesive lamination technology. These large rolls of aluminum foil laminates are ideal for form-fill-seal and pouch production using horizontal or vertical form-fill-seal (HFFS or VFFS) equipment.
Common laminate structures where aluminum foil is paired with other materials include:
Foil-polyester-foil: Sandwiching foil between polyester films enhances durability, printability, and resistance to punctures or tears.
Foil-polyethylene-foil: Uses cast or biaxially oriented polyethylene to provide a food-safe barrier and moisture resistance on both sides of the foil.
Foil-paper-foil: Corrugated paper adds structural rigidity, making the laminate suitable for formed containers, cups, trays or lid applications.
Foil-Polypropylene-Foil: A stiffer yet more flexible combination ideal for resealable zipper bag and resealable bag construction.
With proper lamination, these composite foils offer stability, printability and greater strength than individual foils. The lamination process also completely encapsulates the foil to protect the product and optimize barrier properties.

Speed and formability - High-speed pouches, pouches, blisters and containers can be economically produced using aluminum foil laminates on existing equipment.
