Aluminium beverage can recycling in the U.S.
International Aluminium Institute
Aluminium, shaping a better tomorrow
In the U.S., the aluminium industry is taking significant steps towards sustainability, with over £7 billion invested in recycling and low-carbon aluminium?rolling mill infrastructure. This investment highlights the industry’s commitment to creating a circular economy for aluminium beverage cans.
U.S. states with recycling refund schemes –? where consumers pay a small deposit on beverage containers and receive a refund when returning them for recycling – combined with Extended Producer Responsibility are setting the standard, achieving recycling rates above 77%, are Main, Oregon and California showing the potential for nationwide progressthrough effective policies.
Our latest factsheet outlines the industry’s need to increase recycling from 627,000 tonnes to over 1 million tonnes by 2030?to sustain current recycled content rates of 70%+.
Included in this is a case study on Florida, only one out of five cans are recovered, with the majority ending up in landfills or incinerators. Solutions such as deposit return schemes,?better participation rates in dual collection, smaller profitable catalysts projects?to collect cans and increase awareness and improved material recovery facilities offer a clear path to:
- Reduce landfill waste
- Cut carbon emissions
- Strengthen domestic supply chains

1 个月Aluminium is an?infinitely recyclable material, and it takes up to 95 percent less energy to recycle it than to produce primary aluminium, which also limits emissions, including greenhouse gases. Today, about 75 percent of all aluminium produced in history, nearly a billion tons, is still in use.

2 个月Brazil is the third largest producer of aluminum cans, behind only the USA and China. In 2023, more than 33 billion aluminum cans were produced, accounting for more than 50% of the beer market share and 8% of the soft drinks market share. The most relevant fact about the Brazilian market is that once again the country is the world record holder for recycling aluminum cans, and in 2023, 100% of the cans produced were recycled.?
