Alton's 2024 End of Year + Beijing/Schwarzman Updates

These past several months of 2024 have been some of the most formative of my life. Since August 2024, I have been in China reading for my Master's of Global Affairs at Tsinghua University as part of the Schwarzman Scholars program, a program designed to increase global collaboration and understanding of China’s role in the world. I’ve always believed that traveling provides one the optimal opportunity to unleash themselves from the shackles of encumbered and ordinary thinking; instead, it compels one to dream bigger, bolder, and more imaginatively. That said, my past few months in China as part of this program has helped me do just that. Here’s what I’ve been up to:

In November, I had the opportunity to present my original research at the 2024 Annual Academic Conference of the Chinese Legal Culture Research Association of the Beijing Law Society at Tsinghua University Law School titled, “A Comparative Study on Oriental and Western Concepts of Feudalism from the Judiciary Perspective”. As the title suggests, I presented my original research on the development of the feudal land tenure systems from the judiciary perspective during pre-modern China and England. In particular, I focused on the time periods of China’s Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BC) and Europe’s Middle Ages.
Guizhou Forerunner College is a college designed to train underserved Chinese students in vocational education, including an entire department dedicated to the training of visually impaired students. Humbly, I had the opportunity to teach English language classes to some of these students, even teaching them the Cha Cha slide in the process! Furthermore, Guizhou is home to a variety of ethnic minorities – including the Buyi people whom I had several chances to have phenomenal conversations with. Lastly, I learned about Guizhou’s status as China’s first big data pilot zone, operating many major data centers as part of China’s economic development plans. Being in Guizhou province was by far one of my most memorable moments.
I had the honor of helping my friends, Jinwan Park and Marshall Li, host the inaugural Schwarzman College Korea – China Youth Dialogue Series. The purpose of the series is to foster open communication and mutual understanding between South Korean and Chinese students, a timely initiative given the recent complexity in Republic of Korea-China relations. Additionally, I helped my friend, Peng Guan, host Schwarzman College’s inaugural Mid-Autumn Festival celebration to commemorate the cultural significance of the moon and family in Chinese culture.
Lastly, I explored China and have met the people. During my time at Forerunner College, our team asked the students in our English language class to write down their dreams for their futures on the chalkboard. From “becoming rich” to “ novelist” to “computer engineer”, one lesson remains unquestionably clear: regardless of geographical coordinates, we all typically desire the same things – to have dignity and fulfillment within our work, have financial security for our loved ones, and the ability to do life with those we love. As I consider what lessons to bring back home to Virginia, this lesson currently rings the loudest.

The goal is not to simply be in the echo chambers of prestige and power, but to make these complex, dense geopolitical issues more tangible and something that people back home can grasp. These are just a few lessons that I’ve learned halfway through the program. Let’s see what other lessons I gain during the other half.
