1. Accelerate your organisation’s journey to best practice with the Altis Power BI Framework

We’ve been working with Power BI since it was first released in 2015. We’ve helped many organisations put in place best practice Power BI structures, processes, & templates and we’ve distilled our experience and lessons learnt into the Altis Power BI Framework. The Altis Power BI Framework is a collection of best practice templates, guidelines, standards, and processes that will accelerate your adoption and success with Power BI.

The Altis Power BI Framework is comprised of three main components:

  • Altis Power BI Template: Allows your team to quickly create functionally rich, high quality, and consistent looking reports.
  • Altis Power BI Framework Documentation: A collection of best practice standards, guidelines, and documentation templates that will support your team in the end-to-end report delivery process.
  • Altis Power BI Insights: This solution allows you to track the usage of Power BI objects across your entire Power BI estate to better support your adoption strategy.

I welcome the opportunity to meet with you to demonstrate the Altis Power BI Framework and discuss how it can help accelerate your organisation’s journey to best practice. You can also register for our FREE webinars via the links in the webinars section.

Attendees of this one-day course will learn how to connect Power BI to different data sources, apply rich transformations to the data, and build a best practice Power BI data model that optimises performance, ease of use, flexibility, and accuracy. Students will delve into M (or Power Query) as well as Power BI data modelling, common errors and best practice.

Students will gain a grounding in the principles of data preparation and data modelling enabling them to build reports combining data from multiple sources. There are hands-on Power BI exercises throughout the day to reinforce learnings.

Check out the Power BI Data Wrangling course page for more information including a short video describing what the course covers and who will benefit from it.

“They did a masterful job of describing the philosophy of making and presenting reports.”

“Very informative and interactive. Well paced. Best virtual learning course I have ever done!”

“This was an excellent course, really well presented with great content, more like this one please thank you!”

“They knew how to speak in a way, that felt more engaging and close to home. Presenters can quickly become way too technical and out of touch, that did not happen here.”

“All in all an excellent event. Pitched perfectly at the right level and instructors were fantastic! Would recommend”

3. Blog spotlight: Reports of the Star Schema’s Death are Greatly Exaggerated – Part 1

Beginning in the 1980s and gaining speed after The Data Warehouse Toolkit’s 1996 release, Dimensional Modelling has enabled organisations to better understand their activities and become more data-driven. But new innovations in technology mean we can (and should!) re-consider our ways of working.?A shift to the cloud in the past ten years has enabled cheaper storage and scalable, on-demand compute, while columnar file formats have helped to optimise Big Data workloads with better compression and more efficient reads.?These and other innovations have led some data professionals to eschew Dimensional Modelling (and the synonymous Star Schema), labelling it a dinosaur from a bygone era.?But is there a place for Dimensional Modelling in the modern data landscape? Read Sam Riggs’ excellent blog post to find out!

Our mission at Altis is to guide our clients to become successful data-driven organisations. We are Data & Analytics experts, it’s all we’ve done since we started in 1998. We don’t sell any software, which means we listen carefully to what you need and design solutions that deliver tangible business benefits for you rather than recommending a solution for our own financial gain. We deliver value for our customers in a number of ways, whether it’s helping you create a Data Roadmap to guide your future endeavours, building Data Platforms and Data Visualisation solutions to support organisation-wide decision making, delivering toolset and best practices training, or providing Managed Services for your existing Data & Analytics solutions.

Please feel free to get in touch, as I'd love to catch up with you to learn about what you're looking to achieve in the Data & Analytics space, share how we've helped clients in similar situations, and see if we might be able to help guide you to become a successful data-driven organisation. We enjoy spreading the love, so please feel free to share this newsletter with your networks, or better still, I welcome an introduction.
