The Alps: the Mont-Fort by Helmut Guth

From Albrecht von Haller to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Swiss landscape and particularly Swiss Alps have inspired numerous writers. One of them, William Wordsworth spent a memorable journey in the Alps in 1790 and to celebrate the bicentenary of it, the Wordsworth Trust arranged at Grasmere an exhibition on the Alps with a final weekend conference on “The Alps, Poets, Painters and Travellers”. Indeed, not only writers but also painters received such a deep feeling of nature’s grandeur in the Alps that they felt themselves impelled to convey this impression in their paintings.
