There are tools, advisors, newspapers, funds, tv shows, and websites that can give you enough information to read, analyze and invest. Since 2002, when the term Smart Beta was coined. The industry has tried many ways to beat the S&P 500. Because if a set of rules could beat the S&P 500, one could apply those same rules, to beat any other benchmark. However, Smart Beta has not proved to be smart but has underperformed the S&P 500. Beating the S&P 500 is considered a holy grail of financial innovation for the USD 150 trillion investment management industry.?

Beating the S&P 500 is no vain obsession, it is at the heart of financial innovation. If we can not beat the S&P 500 that became the incumbent method back in 1950, we are stuck in an industry that has not innovated for 75 years. Alpha begins by beating the S&P 500. And as the old broken record goes, 9 out of 10 asset managers don’t beat the market, net of fees, on a 5-year rolling basis. The superiority of the S&P 500 methodology is a myth, and the underperformance of the asset managers has nothing to do with the benchmark’s unassailability. And by generating more alternative information and machine learning to manipulate that information, we are only adding to the complexity of the problem rather than taking the industry out of its rut.
