November is Men’s Health Awareness Month
Shelton, CT – (November 9, 2022) - The reptilian brain.” The “gas pedal” feeling of relentless anxiety. Panic attacks, and fight or flight responses. They were all on the table on Nov. 4 when North Haven clinical psychologist Andy Marcoccia, Ph.D. addressed employees at Alpha Capital in Shelton.
November is National Men’s Health Awareness Month, and Alpha Capital CEO Tyler Smith took notice. He chose this month to bring in Dr. Marcoccia to meet with his mostly Gen-Z, mostly male workforce – part of his focus on a mental health crisis that just days ago claimed the life of young pop singer Aaron Carter.
Alpha Capital COO Johnny Diaz II agrees. He gives daily motivational talks to the sales staff. He said it’s time to shatter the glass ceiling that surrounds talk about mental health issues among men. “There’s no better gift I can give to my team than this resource.”
Not your typical “think positive” narrative, Dr. Marcoccia spoke on the very strong, very real link between brain physiology and life challenges such as depression and anxiety. He took a bottom-up look at brain function and how it impacts strong mental health.
From the brain’s basest survival instincts to higher levels of thought and reasoning, the brain controls our perception of threats, imagined or real. It can release cortisol in non-threatening situations, which can wreak havoc on our bodies.
Marcocchia emphasized that holistic methods, including staying connected, are key antidotes to stress. “Fight the instinct to isolate,” he said. “Find your tribe. Be connected.”
Carlos Galicia, acquisition specialist for Alpha Capital and a Marine Corps veteran, said he struggled with PTSD for years, without understanding the root of it.

At just 26 years old, Smith uniquely appreciates how important it is to support the growth of his young team. “We take a very strong focus on mental health here at Alpha Capital,” Smith said.
Jack Wolfsohn, writer for the National Review said the young male demographic rarely gets the help it needs, facing rising levels of isolation, depression, and generalized anger. He said in June, “… We need to come to grips with the root problems behind the growing mental-health epidemic among young men in America.”
Michael Gurian, family therapist and author of Saving our Sons, told the National Review that too many young men are “…biochemically and neurally depressed.” Numerous studies reveal that about 80% of high school dropouts are male. Smith knows the numbers, and proactively supports his closely knit team.
