Aloha Friday Motivation | End of Year Edition | #268
Happy Aloha Friday the 13th!
Part 1
Alas, my year has been cut a wee bit short. Starting 12/16, I will be on medical leave for approximately 6 weeks. Rest assured, after a surgical procedure and some bed rest, I’ll be right as rain. So the EOY Edition has been bumped up a few weeks and happens to coincide with, you guessed it, Friday the 13th! “Unlucky!” you say? Well, it wasn’t until the 19th century that this legendary mash-up (Friday and the number 13) and paraskevidekatriaphobia (yup, that’s an irrational fear of Friday the 13th) came into existence. And, there is an alternative theory to this doomsday mentality that flips the superstitious and negative connotations associated with this date firmly on its face.
According to this article: “If we dig deeper, we also find evidence that both Fridays and the number 13 have long been regarded as a harbinger of good fortune. In pagan times, for instance, Friday was believed to have a unique association with the divine feminine. The first clue can actually be found in the weekday name Friday, which is derived from Old English and means “day of Frigg.” Both Queen of Asgard and a powerful sky goddess in Norse mythology, Frigg (also known as Frigga) was associated with love, marriage and motherhood. “The number 13, meanwhile, has long been regarded as a portentous number by pre-Christian and goddess-worshipping cultures for its link to the number of lunar and menstrual cycles that occur in a calendar year. Fertility was prized in pagan times, and artwork would often draw connections to menstruation, fertility and the phases of the moon.”
And if that doesn’t do it for you, Taylor Swift, the ultimate influencer, whose birthday is today, on a Friday the 13th, will simply flip the script with her “influence!” So “shake it off” on this super-ultra-amazingly luck day, start reframing what it might mean for you. It’s a practice that, I know, I can implement in a few aspects of my life. As you are doing so, enjoy the Top 10 Paul Simon songs!
Part 2
Now, to keep with the tradition (nay, Superstition) of the annual sign off, EOY, email…for those still reading (TL;DR)…enjoy the below. ?
Whether you leaned in, dove deep, fleshed out, distilled down, bubbled up, leveled up, knew enough to be dangerous, got a lay of the land, put it on the back burner, baked off, ballparked it, band aided it, had a Banner year, a barn burner, took a bio break, boiled the frog, tried to boil the ocean, were boots on the ground, cannibalized, harmonized, came to jesus, wore the cone of silence, were in the cone of silence, in the trust tree, TMI’d, cross-pollinated, cyberslacked, determined the delta, bridged the gap, fought the tape, dovetailed, downsized, drilled down, drank from the fire hose, drove beyond the headlights, got your ducks in a row, were a duck shuffler, operationalized, came out of the woodwork, out of the box, outside the box, out of pocket, met the table stakes, were tactical, hit the tailwinds, were the tailwinds, took the knock, took a bath, tee’d up, travel dazzled, got the quick win, put meat on the bone, picked the bone dry, moved the needle, threaded the needle, muppet shuffled, moved the goal posts, were mission critical, were all hands on deck, paddled on both sides, found the pain point, worked backwards, set a workback date, parking lot’d it, tabled it, paid the piper, towed the party line, found the path forward, weathered the perfect storm, phoned it in, piggybacked, got pinged, did the pinging, ZOOMd, SLACKd, CHIMEd, ?pinned the rose, plugged the dyke, proceduralized, course corrected, pulse checked, punched the tree, put to bed, put the feelers out, put socks on an ocotopus, walked together, wallpapered fog, wallpapered a meeting, washed its face, waxed poetic, weighed the pig, determined where the rubber met the road, got within a nine iron, simply destroyed it, or just plain crushed life or work!
It’s now time to circle back, take a long hard look, take stock, analyze, do a post mortem, debrief, level-set, intellectualize, criticize, critically examine and (insert any other business jargon term I missed) your personal and professional 2024!
It has been a blast sharing these with you each week this year (and last and last)! My final thoughts on the year (in relation to music): When one window shuts it opens a bigger door, right? Should the end of the year be closing chapter, the end of a book, the beginning of the end, the end of the beginning? Should we lament? Celebrate? Both, neither? Is it just a superfluous and contrived moment to be ignored. I will leave you with a series of tracks that battle with this philosophical conundrum.
