What Is Your Single Greatest Responsibility at Work? (Be Forewarned, Almost Everyone Gets This Wrong!)

I do a fair amount of public speaking and I often pose this question to a room of business leaders, owners, executives and other professionals... "In your role at your company, what is your single greatest responsibility?"
Surprisingly, in the tens of thousands over the years who have replied, I can count on one hand how many people gave me the right, or should I say, the best answer.
Your (everyone's) single greatest responsibility is your BEHAVIOR!
Now, I don't mean to diminish the importance the fiscal responsibility a CFO has or the systems efficiency related responsibilities a COO has, but let's be real... if that CFO or COO doesn't live and act according to the stated values of the company, doesn't play nicely with others, or even worse, brings others down instead of lifting people up then, what difference does it make how great they may be in providing results?
Never forget this... How we get things done is more important than the results itself. Let me say that again... how we get things done is more important than the results we deliver itself!
Your single greatest responsibility, therefore, is always your behavior...how you get done what you need to get done. How you conduct yourself. How well you communicate, engage and bring people together. How you deliver results the "right" way - serving, nurturing, empowering. How we embody the company's core values.
Now herein lies a deeper sense of awareness... we judge ourselves not by our behavior but by our intentions. However, others judge us NOT by our intentions but by our behavior. Learning how to carefully and accurately examine and change our behavior may be the single most difficult thing to accomplish - commonly far more difficult than the work-related task at hand.

It pains me to say it but we as humans are naturally set toward conflict because of this quirky social condition. And the answer, the way to defeat this, turn it all around is through something experts call individual and collective mindset shift and behavior modification.
Experts in this field are real folks and they help not only create better outcomes, but better journeys toward that outcome.

So, if someone ever asks you your single greatest responsibility at your job, tell them the truth but more importantly, exercise an ability to demonstrate to them someday that you are not limited to just this awareness, you can explain how deeply introspective and aware you are of your behaviors because you are getting help in the form of a mentor, coach, therapist. (Yes... you, WE, all need this help!).
If you do this, you take charge of your life in this manner, not only will it be for the betterment of you, but also for the betterment of everyone around you and the company as a whole.
