Alma: Georgia's Blueberry Capital and Hub of Innovation

Alma: Georgia's Blueberry Capital and Hub of Innovation

Not only is Alma the county seat of Bacon County, Georgia, but it is also a historically and culturally significant city. Alma has 3,472 residents as of the 2023 census, which adds to the town's tight-knit community feel.

Alma is recognized as the Blueberry Capital of Georgia and is a pioneer in blueberry innovation and research. Our committed growers are constantly looking for new uses for blueberries, which benefits the local economy as well as the agricultural sector. The city proudly celebrates this significant crop and its benefits to the local economy every June with the Blueberry Festival.

Originally established in 1900 as an Atlantic Coast Line Railroad stop, Alma gained city status in 1906 and was designated as the seat of the newly established Bacon County in 1914. There are two theories as to the origin of the city's name: either it was named after the wife of a traveling salesman, Alma Sheridan, or it was the initial letters of the capital cities of Georgia, which are Augusta, Louisville, Milledgeville, and Atlanta.

Alma is home to two bustling industrial parks in addition to a beautiful agricultural region. These parks are home to a wide range of businesses, such as a renowned commercial modular company, an effective distribution company, and a top-tier baking company. Alma's dynamic business environment and dedication to economic growth are highlighted by this variety. These industries create a thriving economic ecosystem by drawing in a skilled talent pool from nearby regions and offering substantial employment opportunities for the local workforce.

The four locations of Alma—Almana Depot, Bacon County Courthouse, Bacon County School, and the Rabinowitz Building—that are included on the National Register of Historic Places serve as additional evidence of the city's historical significance. These sites provide a window into the rich architectural history and colorful past of the city.
