Allyship: a lifelong journey

In order to foster a culture of civility and inclusiveness – both in the workplace and in our broader communities – allies and allyship are essential. An ally is someone who leverages their privilege to end oppression by supporting and advocating for people who are stigmatized, discriminated against and/or treated unfairly. Allyship is a commitment to doing better, uplifting, and making equitable space for historically minoritized individuals and communities like 2SLGBTQIA+ peoples, Indigenous Peoples, Black peoples, racialized peoples, women, and persons with disabilities. It is a journey and a constant ‘work in progress’ rooted in reflection, learning, and practice. To help folks with their allyship journey, they can:

REFLECT:

  • Reflect on and question the stereotypes you hold of 2SLGBTQIA+ peoples.
  • Avoid making assumptions based on societal norms.
  • Consider how 2SLGBTQIA+ people might be impacted by the tone, spirit and direction of your comments.

?

LEARN:

  • Listening to and understanding the diverse experiences of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Being a good ally starts with stepping back and listening.
  • Understand the 2SLGBTQIA+ abbreviation, and the identities behind each letter.
  • Understand what the difference is between assigned sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual attraction.
  • Taking formal training offered by the Canada School of Public Service, your departmental Pride Network, and/or your respective departmental learning hub.

?

PRACTICE:

  • Do more than just show up for the PRIDE parade. An ally does more than take symbolic actions!
  • Add your pronouns to MS teams and/or your email signature.
  • Make space and amplify 2SLGBTQIA+ voices at all levels and tables. These opportunities to be heard are invaluable.
  • Use inclusive and affirming language to ensure everyone feels welcome and respected.
  • Don’t assume everyone is heterosexual!
  • If you make a mistake, apologize regardless of intent. Everyone makes mistakes in an ally role… What matters is how you respond when it gets brought to your attention, and how you enact these lessons learned moving forward.
