Ally the Coaching Elf from Coaching Out Of The Box?
Tip #2 brought to you by the Coaching Out Of The Box? Elf Ally – The Technique Of Silence!
A continuation of Elf Ally’s first tip, about LISTENING, today she wants to tell you a little bit about using silence in your coaching conversations. The first few times you practice this skill you may feel awkward but there is a real purpose behind this technique. It allows the coachee to fully process their response and think through their answer to its fullest – it is essentially giving them space to think and they are more likely to open up when they do speak. Become aware of your own comfort with using silence – do you feel the need to fill each gap in a conversation? Even a simple pause for a few seconds after your coachee responds can elicit further additions to their answers, sometimes this is where you find the gold! Tell us about the last time you experienced something powerful when using this technique – Elf Ally would love to learn how you use this skill.
