Eye to the future?

I’ve been an avid Paris Airshow watcher and sometime attendee for a number of years. Tomorrow sees the first live event since the pandemic struck. Held biennially, at Le Bourget Airport,?the Paris International Airshow, (PIA) , is a highly anticipated event for the aviation industry; it also traditionally alternates with the UK’s showcase Farnborough International Airshow.. Paris serves as a platform for showcasing the latest advancements and innovations in aerospace technology. As the industry continues to evolve, the 2023 edition of the airshow promises to unveil exciting trends and groundbreaking innovations. This article explores some of the key areas where notable advancements are expected, providing a glimpse into the future of aviation.

Electric and Hybrid Aircraft

The growing demand for sustainable aviation has propelled the development of electric and hybrid aircraft. At the Paris International Airshow 2023, significant advancements in electric propulsion systems and hybrid aircraft are expected to take center stage. Aircraft manufacturers, such as Airbus are investing heavily in electric and hybrid technologies to reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution. Airbus is to reveal its EcoPulse?hybrid-electric aircraft for the first time in public next week, ahead of the technology demonstrator’s first flight later this year. Visitors can anticipate model announcements with extended range capabilities and improved energy efficiency. Additionally, hybrid aircraft, combining electric and traditional propulsion systems, will showcase their potential to revolutionize regional and short-haul flights, offering greener alternatives to conventional aviation.

Vertical challenges

The concept of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) has gained momentum in recent years, aiming to revolutionise urban transportation through the use of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The Paris Airshow 2023 is expected to witness the presence of various companies showcasing their UAM solutions at the first Air Mobility Event, which is located in Hall 5. Dedicated to the latest innovations and emerging technologies in eVTOL, visitors can look forward to witnessing the latest eVTOL prototypes, which offer efficient and eco-friendly transportation options for urban commuters.

These aircraft, including Archer’s Midnight?(planned for commercialisation in 2025) and Eve comes to Paris after a successful year that includes the industry’s largest order backlog (2,770 orders) for its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, strong interest and a growing number of customers purchasing its Urban Air Traffic Management (Urban ATM) software and a comprehensive portfolio of agnostic services and operations solutions.

Urban ATM are designed to operate in densely populated areas, reducing congestion and providing faster point-to-point travel. Demonstrations and discussions surrounding infrastructure requirements, air traffic management, and regulatory frameworks for UAM are also likely to take place, highlighting the industry's progress toward implementing this transformative mode of transportation.

This show overview continues daily throughout this week.
