allnex’s Journey to Automate Product Carbon Footprint Calculation

In 2022, allnex launched an initiative to automate Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculations in response to growing business and customer demands for transparent carbon footprint data across our diverse product portfolio.

By February 2023, our teams successfully implemented this automated system at two allnex pilot locations. Following the success of the pilot, we decided to roll out the system across all allnex manufacturing sites worldwide.

This automated tool integrates data from SAP, allnex’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and UL360 for site-specific manufacturing data. Our experts validate emission factors provided by suppliers and other external sources, such as the Ecoinvent database, and fill in any missing raw material data with estimates based on manufacturing processes or raw material family groupings. This ensures the most accurate data for raw materials, factoring in country of origin and specific suppliers. The results reflect cradle-to-gate Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, including direct emissions from production, waste generated during manufacturing, and the emissions from raw material production and transport.

Currently, 18 manufacturing locations are actively using the tool to generate PCF results. We plan to extend this to 25 locations by the end of 2024.

The automation of PCF calculations offers significant benefits for our customers. By automating this process, allnex enables faster, more reliable reporting, ensuring that customers have access to transparent PCF data that can support their own sustainability goals, product certifications, and regulatory compliance.

Additionally, having real-time data facilitates collaborative discussions on how to further reduce the environmental impact of the products they purchase.

Looking forward, we aim to fully automate PCF calculations across all global manufacturing locations by 2025. This will allow us to provide comprehensive, site-specific carbon footprint data to our customers, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and helping them achieve their own environmental objectives.
