All You Need to Know about Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen or inflamed veins located in the rectum or around the anus. They develop due to excessive pressure on these veins, often caused by severe constipation or straining during bowel movements. This pressure leads to the veins swelling and sometimes becoming inflamed, resulting in the painful and uncomfortable symptoms associated with hemorrhoids.

Causes of Hemorrhoids

Anything that increases pressure on the veins in the rectum or anus can lead to hemorrhoids. Some common causes include:

  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • Habitual straining during bowel movements
  • Sitting for long periods, especially on the toilet
  • A diet low in fiber
  • Repeatedly lifting heavy objects
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity

Myth: Spicy food does not cause hemorrhoids. This is a misconception, and there is no scientific evidence linking the two!

Factors That Increase the Risk of Hemorrhoids

Several factors can raise the likelihood of developing hemorrhoids, including:

  • Aging: While hemorrhoids can occur at any age, they are more common between the ages of 45 and 65. This is because the tissues and muscles in the rectum and anus weaken over time.
  • Genetics: If a close family member has hemorrhoids, your chances of developing them may also increase.

Pregnancy and Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are a common issue for pregnant women, especially in the last three months of pregnancy. The reasons for this include:

  • Frequent constipation
  • The growing fetus, which puts pressure on the pelvis and the veins in the rectum and anus
  • Higher levels of the hormone progesterone during pregnancy, which may relax the muscles in the veins, making them more prone to swelling
  • Having hemorrhoids prior to pregnancy can increase the likelihood of recurrence during pregnancy

There's no need to worry—hemorrhoids are not a serious issue, whether during pregnancy or otherwise. They often improve on their own or with simple treatments.

Preventing Hemorrhoids

Here are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing hemorrhoids:

  • Don’t sit on the toilet for more than 10-15 minutes. If you have trouble or are constipated, try again later instead of staying seated for too long.
  • Avoid straining or exerting too much effort during bowel movements.
  • Go to the bathroom as soon as you feel the need and avoid delaying it.
  • Increase your fiber intake, especially if you suffer from constipation. Fiber is abundant in vegetables, fresh fruits, and whole grains, or you can use fiber supplements if needed.
  • Drink plenty of water to promote easier bowel movements.
  • Stay physically active to help keep your bowels moving regularly.
  • Use laxatives when necessary, following the advice of a pharmacist or doctor, to avoid straining.
  • Avoid lifting heavy objects whenever possible.
