The Arabian Mau

One of the oldest natural feline breeds, the Arabian Mau. For over 1000 years, this desert cat has been common in the Arabian Peninsula. When the desert transformed into cities, Arabian Maus moved in on their search for food and quickly became domesticated. Until this day, the Arabian Mau is a common sight in cities. It was not until recently though, that the Arabian Mau has been recognized as an actual breed. Let’s have a look at the appearance of this desert cat.

Appearance

The Arabian Mau has an athletic body and is medium-sized. They have long legs, oval paws, and strong muscles. Distinctive for the breed are the ears, which are large and pointed. The tail is medium long, and somewhat tapered towards the tip. Arabian Maus come in all colors and patterns. As the Arabian Mau comes from a hot climate, they have no undercoat. Their fur is short and requires little grooming.?

Character

The Arabian Mau is a social and energetic breed. They bond exceptionally well with their human family, so be prepared to give them the attention and time they need. Arabian Maus are playful and smart. They need to be stimulated by play and enrichment to prevent boredom and loneliness. Make sure their living space is interesting and engaging. Cat trees, perches, interactive toys, and catios are good options. You could even consider getting some cat puzzles to keep them occupied. Even though the Arabian Mau loves a good cuddle session, they are not lap cats that will lay curled on your lap all day. They do have a fair amount of energy and like to spend their time running and playing. Some Arabian Maus love being walked on a leash, but only do so after training this through positive reinforcement and the area you plan to walk them is safe.?

The Arabian Mau is friendly and adaptable. They often get along with anyone and enjoy the company of kids. Even with other household pets, the Arabian Mau is usually sociable. The Arabian Mau is territorial, so when it comes to other pets, proper introductions are important. Make sure to do introductions gradually and supervise the early interactions. If the fit is right, the Arabian Mau can show the same affection to other animals, like with its human family. Arabian Maus have a lovely personality, and likely will stay close to you and follow you around the house.?

Health

Any pet can get sick and require medical care, but the Arabian Mau is overall a healthy breed. They do not suffer as much of (genetic) illness and conditions as other breeds. It’s always advised to start saving for medical emergencies regardless. Like with any other cat, you need to keep an eye on their overall health. Feed your Arabian Mau a good quality food and keep an eye on their weight. Pet obesity is an increasing concern when it comes to pets in general. Also keep an eye on their teeth, and regularly open their mouth to see if all their teeth are intact, there is no buildup of tartar, or any other dental issues.?

3 Arabian Mau facts

  • The ears of the Arabian Mau are adapted to the climate they originate from. The large, pointed, thin ears help dissipate heat keeping them cool, which is essential in the desert heat.
  • The Arabian Mau is a natural cat breed, which means that unlike many other cat breeds which have been created by human selective breeding, the Arabian Mau developed without human intervention.?
  • Some Arabian Maus can be vocal and love to ‘talk’, They will let you know what they want, and how they want it.

Adopt, don't shop

Before bringing your Arabian Mau home, make sure to have their space set up and ready for them. You could consider setting up a separate room, with their litter boxes, food, and toys. Once your cat or kitten has settled in, you can slowly extend their territory.?

When you have brought your Arabian Mau home, give it time to settle in. They will need time to adjust to their new surroundings and family. The first few weeks will be important when it comes to establishing a strong bond with your Arabian Mau. If your new fur family member hides and doesn’t want to come out, do not force them to interact but let them approach you on their terms. It’s very normal for recently adopted cats or kittens to not show their normal behavior once they move into their new home. While Arabian Maus are often social and accepting of other cats, keep other cats separated from?the new family member until it has settled in and is feeling comfortable. Providing structure and routine will help your cat or kitten settle in.
