Are all writers introverts?

Are all writers introverts?

Are writers just humans with different personalities?

(The movie)

The movie scene opens,

And you see this beautiful coffee shop,

Aesthetic on point.

Someone is making coffee,

The steam is flowing through the serene room,

You’re not there but you can feel it.

Suddenly,

The camera shifts to someone sitting in a corner,

He or she could either be on their laptop or flipping through a book.

They have a lonely air around them.

Something tells you they weave mystery in that silence.

Next thing,

You’re told they’re a writer.

That scene makes you wonder if the shop has customers and how they manage to still be in business.

Next scenario…

The writer is living in this dingy room with his dog and thinking up ideas all day with papers strewn everywhere without going out.

But is this the narrative for all writers?

Is it safe to generalize and say, “Yeah, them writers are pretty weird people who enjoy being cooped up someplace private”?

Sorry though,

  • I do agree that writers are weird (I’m weird). Cos yeah, we do cook up all those things you read.
  • And also writers enjoy privacy so they can think.
  • They love secluded places.

In Tim LaHaye’s book, “Why we act the way we do”, he did mention that Melancholic people (the sad, quiet people) tend to be the creative ones.

Hence, we infer that if he were giving his answer to this debate, melancholic people would mostly be the writers.

But I refuse to believe all writers CAN Be introverts. Just my thought but let us ask the experts.

HERE I GO ON THE FIRST PAGE OF GOOGLE (AGAIN)

  1. In a research by Arfan et al. They found that both introverts and extroverts have a positive correlation to writing.?
  2. The Intrinsic writer believes that only introverts can make good writers. The extrovert needs lots of stimulation and will find it hard to sit for hours writing something on a computer. This does not help the excitement so the extrovert is ruled out as a writer.?
  3. Ryan Lanz, the great novelist believes that though extroverts can make good writers, introverts make better writers. And this is because it is how they communicate.?

Extroverts are more vocal about their thoughts but introverts tend to write their thoughts. And I have to say I resonate with this. I prefer writing what I think and writing to someone I offended rather than speaking to them.?

I express myself more when I write it all down than when I speak about it. So I must say he does have a point.?

He also mentioned that writers have their own world (the quiet people have the loudest minds and need quiet. His opinion was super interesting.?

4. Jenn Granneman in Introvert Dear , says that many introverts prefer writing to speaking out their thoughts.?

They do have a lot to say but it comes easier when they write it than when they speak it because the pathways in the brain for writing and speaking are different and the writing pathway does it best for introverts. There is an agreement with Ryan here.

So we have our answers from the writers themselves…

And when the writers are arguing that they are introverts who am I to say no to them?

But I will still say, that in all the personality groupings, we still see the people who mix it up. The ambiverts. They can switch it up and be the two.

And here’s my conclusion…

Humans are diverse. Humans are different. Various traits can exist in humans and I choose to believe that even this diversity can work for writers.

I believe that extroverts too could make good writers. Though they voice out better than introverts, they also have thoughts.

One of the researches reviewed by Jenn did say humans are visual thinkers and this means we all have that side of our brains that helps us have thoughts and imagine them.?

So in the spirit of the "humans are different" narrative, I say, a writer can be anybody and anybody can be a writer though more introverts than extroverts but yes, we’ll always have the oddballs.

And this marks the end of my voicing my thoughts aloud for the week.
