All the Water that Will Ever Be...

A video from the BBC called "Why water is so strange" came to me today, and one of my pet peeves is the notion that starts this clip, namely, that the only water we have is what’s currently around us.

But take a breath. Every time you breath you’re creating new water molecules through respiration. Look at the tailpipe of your car – do you see water coming out? That’s right, gasoline reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and brand new water molecules. Two H’s and 1 O - simple chemistry.

I don't know where to take this in terms of scaling up a process, and I'm not suggesting we all wear Stillsuits like in they do in Dune. Or maybe I am, because frankly, I don't want to limit your imagination and the water industry needs all of the creative solutions it can get. Remember, using membranes to desalinate water seemed like science fiction at one point too. I hate to say it this way (i.e., in managementese), but sometimes we really do need to think outside of the box. I just wish we weren’t in such a rush to box ourselves in, and it’s a little disheartening to think of the creativity that has been/is stifled by this incorrect view of water.
