If That Was All It Took

If That Was All It Took

…Then why are so many people unhappy??

You see them on your way to work, sitting on the bus, the train, the subway, their cars and even walking: a scowl on their face, slow painful steps toward a day of self imposed drudgery as they head for their chosen jobs. Jobs where they go to be abused, ignored, shouted at, criticized and manipulated. They live a dreadful existence.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

Simon Sinek wrote in his book “Leaders Eat Last”: According to a Gallup poll conducted in 2013, when our bosses completely ignore us, 40% of us actively disengage from our work.?If our bosses criticize us on a regular basis, 22% of us actively disengage. Meaning, even if we’re getting criticized, we are actually more engaged simply because we feel that at least someone is acknowledging that we exist.?And if our bosses recognize just one of our strengths and reward us for doing what we’re good at, only 1 percent of us actively disengage from the work we’re expected to do.

What I believe Simon was saying is that many of us go to work at places where we are miserable because we think it has to be that way based on our history with that company, the company culture and our bosses. And we can see no alternative than to just keep doing what we have been doing.?

But all we need to do is twist our thinking a little and look for something positive someone does… and then tell him or her how we appreciate it.

Not only is this a mind shift, it’s a huge paradigm change that is not for the weak or faint of heart.

If it WAS easy, everyone would do it.

Wouldn’t they?

Actually no, they wouldn’t, because it IS easy and no they DON'T do it.

All we need to do is stop worrying about what others may think, decide that today things will be better, and just do it.?Don’t focus on doing it for the rest of your life, just focus on doing it today, that is much easier to swallow, and is easily doable.

Remember that a positive attitude is simply a choice that we make, so is a bad attitude, and you are the only one who can choose it.?No one can make you feel negative without your choosing to be that way.

You will be happier and much more successful in your life when you choose to be positive.

Now go and make an impact.

That was a good one Paul. It makes it really plain that in many ways our work environment is what we choose it to be. Thankis for taking the time to put that thoughtful piece together.
